Job Description

Our client is seeking an experienced Director of Healthcare Construction to provide executive-level leadership across a portfolio of complex healthcare construction projects.

This is a high-impact leadership opportunity for a construction professional who understands that healthcare construction requires more than delivering a project on time and on budget. You will lead teams through the unique challenges of occupied hospitals, clinical environments, life-safety requirements, regulatory compliance, infection control, and minimizing disruption to patient care.

The ideal candidate is a strategic leader who can maintain oversight of an entire portfolio while remaining engaged in project-level decisions when needed. This individual will mentor project leaders, strengthen client relationships, drive operational improvements, and help position the business unit for long-term growth.

What You'll DoExecutive Project & Portfolio LeadershipProvide executive oversight of multiple healthcare construction projects from preconstruction through completion.

Ensure projects meet established safety, quality, schedule, client satisfaction, and financial objectives.

Maintain visibility across the portfolio through effective delegation, accountability, forecasting, and reporting.

Provide senior-level guidance and decision-making support to Project Executives, Senior Project Managers, Project Managers, and Engineers.

Identify portfolio-level risks and implement strategies to protect project outcomes.

Preconstruction & Project PlanningLead and participate in constructability reviews, project planning, pursuits, and preconstruction activities.

Guide teams through project phasing, logistics, Infection Control Risk Assessment (ICRA) requirements, and Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) requirements.

Partner with estimating teams to ensure budgets accurately reflect project scope, risk, and business strategy.

Provide executive oversight of subcontractor procurement, buyouts, and trade partner engagement.

Build and maintain strong relationships with subcontractors, vendors, and strategic trade partners.

Healthcare Project ExecutionEnsure project execution plans appropriately address the complexities of occupied healthcare facilities.

Oversee planning and logistics around hospital operations, clinical activities, shutdowns, and required downtime.

Ensure teams understand and comply with applicable healthcare construction, regulatory, and life-safety requirements.

Provide executive support when complex project issues require senior-level intervention.

Scheduling & Risk ManagementEnsure project schedules are achievable and aligned with contractual commitments.

Review critical path risks, milestones, pull plans, recovery plans, and schedule impacts across the portfolio.

Ensure schedules account for clinical operations, hospital restrictions, patient-care requirements, and other healthcare-specific constraints.

Participate in owner discussions involving significant schedule, risk, or project-delivery issues.

Contract & Financial ManagementProvide oversight of owner contracts, subcontracts, and vendor agreements.

Negotiate complex or high-value contractual terms and help mitigate contractual exposure.

Support dispute resolution and other high-stakes contractual matters.

Own the financial performance of the assigned project portfolio, including budgets, forecasts, profitability, and corrective actions.

Ensure financial reporting is accurate, timely, and aligned with business objectives.

Safety, Quality & Continuous ImprovementChampion a culture of safety, quality, accountability, and compliance across the business unit.

Hold project teams accountable to established safety and performance KPIs.

Participate in safety audits, reviews, training, and leadership initiatives.

Identify opportunities to improve project delivery, operational efficiency, technology adoption, and reporting.

Drive implementation of standardized processes and best practices across projects.

Champion the adoption of project management technologies and financial/reporting systems.

Client Development & Relationship ManagementServe as an executive sponsor for key healthcare client relationships.

Develop trusted, long-term relationships with healthcare owners and decision-makers.

Participate in business development pursuits, proposals, presentations, and client interviews.

Help identify opportunities for repeat and expanded business.

Lead post-project reviews and ensure client feedback is translated into improved delivery and future opportunities.

Leadership & Team DevelopmentLead with a clear vision while fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and high performance.

Mentor and develop Project Executives, Senior Project Managers, Project Managers, and engineering staff.

Identify and develop future leaders within the organization.

Navigate complex and high-stakes conversations with professionalism and sound judgment.

Promote employee engagement, professional development, and continuous improvement.

What We're Looking For12-15+ years of progressive construction/project management experience.

Proven experience leading hospital, medical facility, or complex healthcare construction projects.

Demonstrated success managing large-scale construction projects and/or portfolios.

Strong understanding of healthcare construction regulations, life-safety requirements, ICRA, and AHJ requirements.

Experience managing construction in occupied or operational healthcare environments is highly valued.

Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field; advanced degree is a plus.

Strong contract negotiation and contract management capabilities.

Demonstrated financial acumen, including budgeting, forecasting, profitability, and project financial reporting.

Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with executive-level clients and stakeholders.

Strong understanding of project management, financial, and reporting systems.

Exceptional leadership, communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

Demonstrated ability to mentor, develop, and lead high-performing construction teams.
