Position Summary:
The Marine Electrician is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing electrical systems and components aboard commercial marine vessels, offshore platforms, and shipyards. This role requires expertise in high- and low-voltage power distribution, navigation systems, generator controls, and motor control centers (MCCs) operating under strict marine regulatory frameworks and harsh oceanic environments.
Key Responsibilities:
System Installation & Wiring:
Lay out, pull, band, and terminate marine-grade armored and shielded cables through bulkheads, decks, and cable trays according to marine electrical schematics and one-line diagrams.
Power Distribution & Control:
Install, test, and maintain shipboard power generation systems, main switchboards, transformers, emergency power systems, and motor control centers (MCCs).
Troubleshooting & Repair:
Diagnose and repair electrical faults in navigation lights, alarm/monitoring systems, propulsion controls, steering gear systems, and auxiliary deck machinery.
Marine Equipment Maintenance:
Perform preventative maintenance on DC/AC motors, generators, switchgear, searchlights, shore power connections, and battery banks.
Code Compliance & Quality Control:
Ensure all installations strictly comply with American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), United States Coast Guard (USCG), IEEE 45, and National Electrical Code (NEC) standards for marine environments.
Penetration & Sealing:
Execute proper multi-cable transit (MCT) installations and watertight bulkhead penetration seals to maintain vessel structural integrity and fire/water containment.
Commissioning & Testing:
Conduct insulation resistance (Megger) testing, continuity checks, and operational load testing during commissioning and dock/sea trials alongside Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) and marine surveyors.
Safety Enforcement:
Adhere strictly to Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), confined space entry protocols, and company/OSHA marine safety guidelines in high-risk shipyard and offshore environments.
Qualifications:
Experience:
3+ years of hands-on experience as a Marine Electrician in shipyards, commercial vessel repair, or offshore platform environments.
Blueprint Literacy:
Proven expertise in reading and interpreting marine electrical schematics, P&IDs, elementary wiring diagrams, and vessel general arrangement drawings.
Technical Knowledge:
Strong understanding of AC/DC voltage systems, generator paralleling, phase rotation, and marine grounding techniques.
Safety & Credentials:
Valid Driver's License and TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential) or eligibility to obtain one. Journeyman Electrician License or NCCER Marine Electrician Certification (Preferred) OSHA 10 or 30 Maritime Certification (OSHA 7600/OSHA 5410) (Preferred) Familiarity with ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council) or ABS standards (Preferred)
Physical Requirements:
Work Environment:
Field operations located in shipyards, drydocks, and aboard vessels. Work involves exposure to outdoor weather conditions, extreme temperatures, loud machinery, and maritime environments.
Physical Demands:
Ability to climb vertical ladders, work in confined spaces (bilges, tanks, void spaces), stand or kneel for extended periods, and lift up to 50 lbs.
Travel:
Willingness to travel to regional shipyards, marine docks, or offshore facilities as required by project schedules.
