Job Description

Earthwork EstimatorPosition Overview The Earthwork Estimator is responsible for producing accurate, competitive estimates for earthmoving and site development projects. This role analyzes civil drawings and geotechnical reports, quantifies earthwork and related scope items, develops cost models using industry software, and collaborates with project managers, operations and subcontractors to prepare bid proposals and support project planning.

Key ResponsibilitiesPrepare detailed earthwork estimates and quantity takeoffs from civil drawings and geotechnical reports for bids and internal budgeting.

Develop cost models and estimates for mass excavation, cut/fill balancing, import/export, rock excavation, retention systems, and site grading.

Use estimating and production software (AGTEK, Bluebeam, Trimble or equivalent) to create electronic takeoffs, surfaces, and production forecasts.

Review civil drawings, specifications and geotechnical reports to identify scope, risks, contingency needs and constructability issues.

Coordinate with project managers, field superintendents and heavy equipment crews to validate productivity assumptions and site logistics.

Prepare and submit comprehensive bid proposals, including scope definitions, assumptions, exclusions and unit prices.

Solicit, evaluate and incorporate subcontractor and supplier pricing; develop cost comparisons and clarifications.

Perform value engineering and alternative approach analysis to improve cost efficiency while maintaining project requirements.

Maintain historical cost databases, estimate files and documentation to support continuous improvement and future estimating accuracy.

Participate in site visits and pre-bid meetings to verify existing conditions and gather information for accurate estimating.
QualificationsRequired:
Demonstrated experience in estimating earthwork projects with a strong track record of accurate bids and successful award-to-completion correlation.
Required:
Proficiency in estimating and earthwork quantity takeoffs; ability to interpret civil drawings and geotechnical reports.

Nice to have: Experience with AGTEK, Bluebeam, Trimble and other civil/site production software.

Nice to have: Background in civil construction, heavy equipment production planning and site logistics.
Education:
Degree or diploma in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Estimating or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
Experience:
3+ years of dedicated earthwork or heavy civil estimating experience (adjustable based on seniority level desired).
Technical skills:
Advanced Excel skills, familiarity with digital takeoff tools, and ability to produce clear cost breakdowns and assumptions.

Soft skills: Strong written and verbal communication, detail-oriented, ability to work under bid deadlines and collaborate cross-functionally.
Other:
Valid drivers license and ability to attend site visits as required.
