Mechanical EstimatorJob Description This role focuses on developing accurate cost estimates for mechanical and related disciplines on large capital construction projects. You will support major manufacturing and semiconductor facilities, provide business support to management, and mentor junior staff. The position involves detailed pricing and benchmarking research, close collaboration with engineers and project teams, and diligent maintenance of project documents and cost data libraries. Responsibilities Analyze blueprints, specifications, and other design documents to prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates for mechanical and related disciplines. Perform precise quantity takeoffs from available design documents, ensuring all materials, equipment, and labor are correctly captured. Obtain current and accurate pricing information from databases, contractors, suppliers, and other sources to support robust and defensible estimates. Input estimate takeoff information for specific disciplines and develop unit cost pricing that reflects project requirements and market conditions. Work closely with engineers and other project stakeholders to develop a clear understanding of project scope during estimate preparation. Build and maintain strong working relationships with members of architecture and engineering firms and other project team members to support effective collaboration. Assist senior staff in identifying ways to make projects more efficient, including suggesting improvements to processes, methodologies, and tools. Continuously seek ways to improve the accuracy and efficiency of estimating tasks and related workflows. Maintain project documents such as drawings and specifications in an organized and logical manner, following established standards. Maintain and organize project files on the file server in accordance with company procedures and document control standards. Maintain and update a data library of costs, ensuring information remains current, accurate, and readily accessible to the team. Prepare cost reconciliations between two or more estimates and clearly explain variance cost drivers to project stakeholders. Provide guidance and support to junior estimating staff, sharing best practices and promoting a collaborative team environment. Support pricing and benchmarking research activities to help the team compare costs across projects and refine estimating models. Essential Skills At least seven years of experience as an estimator in manufacturing and/or mechanical, electrical, or process piping contracting environments. Bachelor's degree in Construction, Quantity Surveying, or a related field. Strong background in mechanical estimating, including piping and MEP systems, within large capital construction projects. Proficiency in quantity takeoffs and quantity surveying for construction projects. Working knowledge of electronic takeoff tools, including CAD-based measurement solutions such as CAD Measure. Working knowledge of a commercially available construction cost estimating system. Ability to interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications accurately and translate them into detailed cost estimates. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and the broader Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to use Information Technology tools effectively, including Internet and Intranet resources, Microsoft Windows operating systems, Adobe Acrobat, and Microsoft Project.
