Job Description

An effective Team Member is a key contributor to the structural steel fabrication team and tasked with producing quality fabricated steel assemblies. This individual demonstrates technical expertise, with attention to detail, and a strong commitment to production, safety and teamwork. Accurately cut and cope materials as directed by shop drawings. Perform precise fitup of handrails, ladders and other components, ensuring alignment and dimensional accuracy. Execute highquality welds using appropriate techniques based on material and project requirements. Conduct visual inspections and measurements to verify compliance with specifications and tolerances. Collaborate with team members to maintain efficient workflow and uphold safety protocols. Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in clean and functional condition.
Work priorities:

Safely operate overhead cranes Load material (parts and beams or columns) onto work benches Structural welders must meet several physical demands due to the nature of the work:
Strength and Stamina:
Ability to lift and carry heavy tools, materials, and equipment (often 50+ lbs). Some lifting may be sustained for long periods.
Manual Dexterity:
Excellent hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills to handle welding tools and perform precise welds.
Endurance:
Ability to stand, stoop, crouch, kneel, or climb for extended periods.
Flexibility:
Must be able to work in various positions, including overhead, vertical, and confined spaces.
Visual Acuity:
Good vision (with or without correction) to inspect welds and read blueprints.
Balance and Coordination:
Especially important when working at heights or on scaffolding.
Work Locations:
Indoor fabrication shop and occasional outdoor work.
Weather Exposure:
Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions, including heat, humidity, cold, rain, and wind. A Fitter Welder operates primarily in a structural steel fabrication shop, with occasional outdoor work, which presents a variety of environmental and physical hazards. The role requires strict adherence to safety protocols and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
Environmental Conditions:
Exposure to high noise levels from cutting, grinding, and welding operations. Frequent presence of dust, fumes, and airborne particles, especially from welding and metal finishing. Variable temperatures due to weather, open bay doors, welding heat, and seasonal changes. Occasional work at elevated heights or in confined spaces during inspections of large assemblies.
Physical Hazards:
Risk of cuts, burns, and abrasions from sharp edges, hot surfaces, and welding equipment. Potential for impact injuries from moving steel components, overhead cranes, forklifts, and other heavy machinery. Exposure to welding arcs and UV radiation, requiring proper eye and skin protection. Manual handling of heavy tools and materials, requiring proper lifting techniques and ergonomic awareness.
Safety Requirements:
Must wear appropriate PPE including steeltoed boots, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, and flameresistant clothing. Must be trained in many safety topics including but not limited to hazard communication (HazCom), lockout/tagout (LOTO), fall protection, and confined space entry procedures. Expected to participate in regular safety meetings, audits, and emergency drills. Responsible for reporting unsafe conditions and participating in continuous improvement of shop safety practices. Must obtain OSHA 10 card for jobsite work.
Compliance:
Must follow OSHA safety standards and AISC Quality and Welding standards
Work Schedule:
May include overtime, weekends, and night shifts depending on project deadlines.
