Job Description

Overview The Harrison Water Department will be accepting resumes and applications for a Motor Equipment Operator II position on the Water Department Construction crew. Applicants must have knowledge of installing and replacing water pipe and fittings or have experience in utility construction. Applicants must have the ability to obtain a Class II water license within a year, a Class A or B CDL within sixty days of employment, and must be able to operate heavy equipment including Backhoe, Skid Steer, Bull dozer, Mini Excavator and other equipment as needed. Applicants must be able to perform the tasks of a skilled laborer, as well as other departmental tasks as assigned, when not engaged as a driver. It is also very important that applicants work well with others and can work under very unforgiving and harsh conditions at times depending on weather conditions. Other job duties will be discussed during the interview.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Good knowledge of standard practices, specifications methods and materials used in Department of Public Works construction and maintenance activities; skill in the operation of motor and construction equipment under all types of weather conditions; familiar with setting grades with transit, level op laser; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; good practices; ability to repair and adjust equipment; dependability; good physical condition.
Acceptable Experience and Training:
Considerable experience in the operation of the majority of all illustrative equipment and completion of a standard high school course or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
Distinguishing Features of Class:
An employee in the class operates equipment with complex controls. The work requires considerable skill, experience and manipulative ability in operating equipment efficiently so as not to impede the progress of related operations. Standard procedures are followed, and the work is inspected periodically for safety and economy of operation. This class differs from that of Motor Equipment Operator I because of the higher degree of skill required and the greater consequences of errors together with the familiarity and ability to operate more varied and comprehensive number of departmental equipment. Supervision may be exercised and required over Laborers and Motor Equipment Operators I.
Examples of Work:
(Illustrative Only) Sets up and operates boring machine, hole-hog, camera and or flush truck; Operates a front-end diesel loader and/or backhoe in digging ditches, and in backfilling excavations and trenches; Operates jackhammer, air compressor, air drill, dozer, street sweeper, and snow plow. May be asked to operate street roller and road grader on an as needed basis; Installs new sewer and water lines and is proficient in rules and regulations and specifications of same; May set grades with transit, level or laser; Pours and finishes concrete manholes, inverts, curbing and other concrete improvements; Taps sewer and water lines for new services; Makes minor repairs to equipment; Knowledge of all aspects of departmental construction and maintenance procedures.
