Job Description

An underground utility heavy equipment operator is responsible for operating large machinery to install, repair, and maintain underground infrastructure like water lines, sewer systems, electrical conduits, and telecommunications cables. Core Responsibilities Operate heavy equipment such as excavators, backhoes, trenchers, and loaders to dig trenches and move earth Install underground utilities (water, sewer, gas, electrical, fiber optic lines) Read and interpret site plans, blueprints, and utility maps Ensure proper trench depth, alignment, and grading Work around existing utilities carefully to avoid damage Perform routine equipment inspections and basic maintenance Follow safety procedures, including trench safety and confined space protocols Assist ground crews when needed (spotting, pipe placement, etc.) Skills & Qualifications Experience operating heavy machinery (5+ years preferred) Knowledge of underground utility installation methods Ability to read blueprints and grade stakes Understanding of safety standards (like OSHA guidelines) Good hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness Physical stamina for outdoor work in varying conditions
