Roller Heavy Equipment Operator Job Description This role supports ash basin closure and environmental remediation activities in Mt. Holly, NC by safely operating roller and compaction equipment to achieve required density specifications on coal ash, soil, and other materials across an active project site. Responsibilities Operate vibratory and static rollers, including single drum, smooth drum, padfoot, and other compaction equipment, in a safe, efficient, and productive manner. Perform compaction of coal ash, dirt, and other materials to meet project-specific density and quality requirements. Follow grade stakes, compaction specifications, and directions from site supervision to achieve accurate grades and proper compaction. Maintain production targets while working in an active, high-volume construction and earthmoving environment. Conduct thorough pre-shift equipment inspections and promptly report any maintenance or safety issues. Work closely with excavator operators, haul truck drivers, and site supervision to coordinate activities and support overall project objectives. Monitor surface and subgrade conditions and identify areas that require additional compaction or corrective work. Adhere to all site safety, environmental, and operational procedures and requirements at all times. Maintain accurate records of equipment operation, daily production activities, and any required documentation. Support high-production excavation, earthworks, and material handling activities associated with ash basin closure at active power plant sites. Use radio communication effectively to coordinate movements and maintain safe operations around other heavy equipment and crews. Operate safely on uneven terrain, haul roads, and active construction surfaces while hauling and compacting dirt, rock, aggregate, coal ash, and other environmental materials. Essential Skills Demonstrated experience operating single drum, smooth drum, padfoot, or vibratory rollers in heavy production environments. Ability to work safely and efficiently around active earthmoving operations and heavy construction equipment. Familiarity with achieving compaction specifications and working from grade stakes in grading and earthmoving projects. Experience in heavy civil construction, grading, landfill, mining, quarry, or environmental remediation projects. Understanding of construction site safety practices and commitment to safe work methods. Capability to maintain productivity and quality in fast-paced, production-driven work environments. Experience working with earthworks, including hauling dirt, rock, aggregate, and environmental materials. Knowledge of equipment inspections and preventative maintenance for heavy equipment. Ability to use radio communication to coordinate with operators and site supervision. Comfort operating on uneven terrain and haul roads while maintaining control and safety. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience supporting ash pond closures, ash basin closure projects, or coal ash handling and transport. Experience in environmental remediation, dredging projects, dam work, landfills, mining operations, or other large-scale grading and earthmoving projects. Experience with heavy production hauling using off-road dump trucks and other earthmoving equipment. Knowledge of loading and dumping procedures and safe operation around excavation crews. Attention to detail in monitoring compaction results and identifying areas needing additional work. Strong commitment to safety, quality, and environmental compliance standards. Work is performed outdoors on uneven terrain, haul roads, and active construction surfaces, requiring strict adherence to safety, quality, and environmental compliance standards and the ability to remain alert and responsive around moving equipment and excavation crews. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Mount Holly, NC. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $23.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
