Skid Steer Heavy Equipment Operator Job Description This position is responsible for operating skid steers on large-scale ash basin closure projects, supporting heavy production earthmoving, grading, material handling, and environmental remediation activities. The ideal candidate will have experience operating skid steers in environmental remediation, heavy civil construction, mining, landfill, dredging, or ash pond closure environments. Operators will be expected to perform a variety of tasks including material movement, site cleanup, grading support, and loading activities while maintaining productivity, quality, and safety standards. Responsibilities Operate skid steers to move, grade, and manage coal ash, soil, rock, and other materials in a safe and efficient manner. Support excavator, dozer, roller, and haul truck operations by transporting materials and maintaining work areas. Perform rough grading, finish grading preparation, and site cleanup activities to support ash basin closure and environmental remediation efforts. Maintain haul roads, drainage features, slopes, and work areas using skid steer attachments as required. Utilize various skid steer attachments including buckets, forks, grading attachments, and brooms to support project operations. Work closely with haul truck operators, excavator operators, roller operators, and site supervision to maintain production targets and efficient material movement. Follow grade stakes and site plans to ensure work is completed to project specifications. Conduct high-volume material handling, grading support, and earthmoving activities in a fast-paced construction environment. Perform daily equipment inspections and report maintenance concerns to site supervision. Maintain awareness of nearby equipment, personnel, and active haul routes while operating safely in congested work areas. Adhere to all site safety, environmental, and operational requirements while minimizing downtime and maximizing productivity. Essential Skills Experience operating skid steers in heavy production environments. Ability to work safely around active haul routes and multiple pieces of heavy equipment. High-production experience on ash pond closures, environmental remediation projects, landfills, mining operations, dredging projects, heavy civil construction projects, or other large-scale earthmoving operations. Experience with grading, site cleanup, material handling, attachment operation, and supporting excavation and earthmoving crews. Skill in operating dozers, excavators, and other earthworks equipment. Proficiency in heavy production excavation and coal ash handling. Experience in off-road haul truck loading and ash basin closure. Knowledge of environmental remediation projects and mass earthmoving operations. Familiarity with landfill, mining, or dredging environments. Ability to perform grade control and precision excavation. Safe operation around heavy equipment and excavation in wet or unstable ground conditions. Experience in equipment inspections and preventative maintenance. Ability to work in production-driven environments. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with heavy civil construction. Experience with dirt moving, earthworks, and construction activities. Experience with track hoes, long reach equipment, and fine grading. Why Work Here? Work Environment This role supports ash basin closure projects at active power plants, performing high-production excavation, grading, and earthmoving activities. Operators will primarily utilize excavators (track hoes) and dozers to excavate, move, grade, and manage coal ash, soil, and other materials throughout the project site. Responsibilities include loading off-road haul trucks, performing rough and finish grading, constructing and maintaining haul roads, and supporting basin closure operations. Candidates must be comfortable operating both pieces of equipment in a heavy production environment while maintaining strict safety, quality, and environmental compliance standards. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Mount Holly, NC. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $27.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
