Description
LABORER/LIGHT EQUIPMENT OPERATOR FULL TIME - GENERAL DEFINITION
- An employee in the position of Laborer performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled road and street related duties requiring strenuous physical effort and occasional exposure to inclement working conditions.
REPORTS TO
- Roadmaster & Sewer Manager, Valid driver's License required, prefer a Class B PA Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Safely and efficiently operate Highway Department vehicles and tractors. Perform Township road, street, and property maintenance, including paving, crack sealing, stormwater system installation and repair, drainage work, sign and guiderail repair, debris and tree removal, traffic control support, equipment cleaning, garage upkeep, light carpentry, moving heavy items, and other assigned duties. Provide snow and ice control by plowing, loading cinder trucks, and applying salt or cinders. Assist with mowing highways, open spaces, detention ponds, and rights-of-way, and maintain mowing records. Perform manual and semi-skilled sewer department work to maintain, clean, and repair wastewater collection and storm drainage systems, including data collection and related support. Complete other tasks assigned by the Roadmaster.
TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
- Review front-end loader safety procedures and learn to load cinders onto cinder trucks. This position may operate only the heavy equipment needed to load salt and/or cinders during snow and ice control.
WORK HOURS
- This position requires eight (8) hours per day, forty (40) hours per week, Monday through Friday, with one (1) total hour daily for lunch and breaks. Paid overtime is required as needed. Snow, ice, and emergency call-outs are assigned by seniority.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of hand and power tools, including mowers, saws, trimmers, and similar equipment. Ability to follow oral and written instructions; work independently; perform manual and heavy labor for extended periods in adverse weather; learn specialized Highway Department equipment; work overtime and respond to call-outs at any hour; operate vehicles and equipment safely; walk, lift, bend, and carry heavy objects; learn new tasks; and show initiative without direct supervision. Must have the physical strength and ability to lift heavy objects and work in adverse weather.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION:
High School Diploma or
G.E.D. EXPERIENCE
One (1) year of experience driving standard-shift vehicles and performing general outdoor work.
