The firm handles matters involving civil rights, serious personal injury, employment disputes, real estate litigation, and other complex civil matters in Ohio state and federal courts. We are seeking a full-time Litigation Paralegal / Legal Assistant to work directly with the managing attorney and assist with the day-to-day management of an active litigation docket. This position is intended for someone who is organized, proactive, detail-oriented, and comfortable taking ownership of assignments. The successful candidate should be able to monitor cases, identify what needs to happen next, and bring deadlines or potential issues to the attorney's attention before they become urgent.
Responsibilities Responsibilities include:
Maintain and monitor court deadlines, hearings, depositions, mediations, discovery deadlines, expert deadlines, and trial dates. Review court notices, scheduling orders, and docket entries and calendar applicable deadlines. Prepare, format, proofread, finalize, electronically file, and serve pleadings, motions, notices, discovery documents, subpoenas, and other legal filings. Assist with written discovery, including interrogatories, requests for production, requests for admission, discovery responses, document production, and discovery follow-up. Organize and maintain electronic case files, pleadings, correspondence, discovery, exhibits, expert materials, medical records, and other litigation documents. Coordinate depositions, court reporters, witnesses, experts, process servers, mediations, inspections, and other litigation-related matters. Prepare deposition exhibits, hearing materials, witness materials, exhibit lists, and trial binders. Assist attorneys with deposition, mediation, hearing, and trial preparation. Request and organize medical records, billing records, employment records, government records, and other case-related materials. Communicate professionally with clients, opposing counsel, courts, experts, witnesses, providers, vendors, and other third parties. Follow up with clients regarding discovery responses, documents, scheduling, records, appointments, and other outstanding information. Monitor assigned matters and proactively identify outstanding tasks or issues requiring attorney attention. Prepare case chronologies, summaries, document indexes, and organizational materials as needed. Assist with opening new matters, maintaining case information, and file-closing procedures. Assist with settlement-related documentation. Maintain attorney calendars and assist with litigation scheduling. Participate in case-status meetings and maintain accurate internal task lists. Perform other litigation and administrative duties reasonably related to the position. Qualifications The ideal candidate will have: Prior law firm or litigation experience. Strong organizational and case-management skills. Excellent attention to detail. Strong proofreading, grammar, writing, and document-formatting abilities. Ability to manage multiple matters and competing deadlines. Ability to work independently while recognizing when attorney involvement is necessary. Professional judgment and discretion when handling confidential information. Strong communication and client-service skills. Reliability, accountability, and consistent follow-through. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced litigation environment. Strong technology skills and the ability to learn new systems. Preferred Experience Preference will be given to candidates with experience involving: Ohio civil litigation. Federal civil litigation. Personal injury litigation. Civil rights litigation. Employment litigation. Real estate or commercial litigation. Written discovery and document production. Depositions and subpoenas. Trial preparation. Ohio electronic filing systems. Federal CM/ECF filing. Clio or similar legal practice-management software. Microsoft 365, Outlook, Word, OneDrive, and SharePoint. Adobe Acrobat and PDF preparation. Three or more years of litigation experience is preferred, but qualified candidates with less experience will be considered. A paralegal certificate or college degree is preferred but is not required where the applicant has substantial relevant law-office experience.
