MAA New Beginnings Youth Development Center (NB) is the District of Columbia's long-term detention center for male and female youth located in Laurel, MD. It is responsible for the care and custody of youth placed in secure detention by court order. Position Overview Site Description The New Beginnings Youth Development Center (New Beginnings) is the District of Columbia's long-term juvenile detention center for male and female youth, responsible for the care and custody of young people placed in secure detention by the DC Superior Court.3 Position Overview The Special Education Teacher/Case Manager will provide individualized instruction and case management services to students within a secure facility. In one class period, the Special Education Teacher/Case Manager will support scholars taking multiple courses—including accelerated offerings—across the following content areas: English/ELA, math, science, and history. The role requires flexibility and adaptability in planning and delivering specialized instructional strategies to meet scholars' needs. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Instructional Delivery:
Facilitate multi-grade, multi-content coursework for scholars in their units. Adapt and/or modify lessons to accommodate varied learning styles, abilities, and academic levels of scholars. Ensure high-quality instructional materials comply with organization, facility, district, and federal education regulations. Prepare reports (lesson plans, assessments, progress reports, gradebook, etc.) on time and in accordance with organizational guidelines. Case Management ,
Compliance, and Reporting:
Serve as case manager for students with IEPs. Develop, review, and update IEPs in compliance with IDEA. Conduct IEP meetings, reevaluations, and manifestation determinations. Monitor and document student progress. Ensure compliance with all timelines and documentation requirements.
Classroom Management:
Maintain a positive, structured learning environment for all scholars. Use restorative practices to support scholars' academic and behavioral growth.
Collaboration, Support, and Guidance:
Work closely with colleagues, leadership, and facility staff to ensure delivery of a well-rounded educational program. Participate in team meetings to discuss scholar progress, share strategies, and address academic and/or behavioral concerns. Communicate regularly with staff about scholar needs and achievements. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in education or subject field (required) Must have or be eligible for initial certification by OSSE in the appropriate content area (must obtain initial certification within 1 year of employment) Knowledge of IDEA and IEP development. Salary and Benefits Maya Angelou Schools and See Forever Foundation salaries are comparable to those of other public charter schools in the District of Columbia area.
