Job Description

Forklift & Crane Operator (Steel Facility) Job Summary We are seeking a skilled and safety-conscious Forklift & Crane Operator to join our team at Lockport Steel. In this role, you will be responsible for the efficient and safe transport of raw steel materials and finished products throughout our facility. The ideal candidate has a strong background in industrial material handling, a commitment to rigorous safety protocols, and the ability to operate both overhead cranes and forklifts to support our production, shipping, and receiving operations.
Key Responsibilities Material Handling:
Operate forklifts and overhead cranes to move structural steel (beams, plates, tubing, coils) safely throughout the yard and warehouse.
Loading/Unloading:
Efficiently load and unload flatbed trucks and trailers, ensuring loads are balanced, secured, and properly tagged.
Production Support:
Transport raw materials to fabrication stations and move finished products to designated storage or shipping areas.
Equipment Maintenance:
Conduct pre-shift inspections of all equipment (forklifts, cranes, rigging, and slings). Perform minor maintenance and report any mechanical issues immediately to supervision.
Safety Compliance:
Adhere strictly to all OSHA regulations and company safety policies. Maintain clear communication with ground personnel and ensure pedestrian exclusion zones are respected.
Documentation:
Accurately verify incoming/outgoing materials against work orders and maintain precise inventory logs.
Housekeeping:
Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work environment.
Requirements & Qualifications Experience:
Proven experience operating forklifts and overhead cranes in a heavy industrial or steel manufacturing environment.
Certification:
Valid forklift operator certification is required. Crane operator certification or demonstrated proficiency is highly preferred.
Technical Skills:
Ability to read work orders, shipping documents, and basic blueprints/material specifications.
Safety First:
Deep understanding of load capacities, rigging safety, and center-of-gravity principles for heavy steel products.
Physical Stamina:
Ability to work in an industrial, non-climate-controlled environment. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and remain active throughout the shift.
Reliability:
Strong work ethic, attention to detail, and a commitment to teamwork. Work Environment & Physical Demands This position is located in a steel facility with exposure to loud noises, heavy machinery, and varying outdoor weather conditions. Required to wear all necessary PPE, including but not limited to: steel-toed boots, hard hat, high-visibility vest, safety glasses, and gloves.
Pay:
$25.38 - $30.57 per hour
