Job Description

Organizational Background Vivery Community is a Chicago-based nonprofit founded in 2021, driven by a belief that everyone deserves access to nutritious food and the support they need to thrive. Since then, we have grown into a leading food equity organization, bringing together healthcare providers, community organizations, charitable food providers, government agencies, and local leaders to address food insecurity across Chicago's South and West Sides — delivering nutritious food directly to people facing the greatest barriers to access. To date, we have delivered more than 365,000 meals, and this year we are reaching more than 600 households across 24 communities. Summary of Position The Grant Writer supports Vivery Community's institutional fundraising by developing high-quality grant proposals, applications, reports, and related materials for foundation, corporate, and government funders. Working from established organizational messaging, program information, and proposal language, the Grant Writer will tailor materials to individual funding opportunities and ensure submissions are clear, compelling, accurate, and responsive to funder requirements. This role will primarily provide research and writing support. The Grant Writer will not be responsible for managing institutional donor relationships or the organization's overall grants pipeline.
Grant Writing & Proposal Development:
60% Draft, adapt, and edit letters of inquiry, grant proposals, applications, and other funder-facing materials using established organizational and program language Tailor standard grant language to individual funder priorities, questions, formats, and character/word limits Translate program plans, outcomes, budgets, and organizational information into clear and compelling proposal narratives Support development of government grant applications and other complex funding opportunities, as needed Incorporate feedback from the Development Manager, Executive Director, and program staff into final submissions Proofread and quality-check materials for accuracy, consistency, clarity, and compliance with funder requirements
Grant Submissions & Reporting:
25% Prepare and organize required proposal attachments, including budgets, organizational documents, program materials, and other supporting documentation Complete online grant applications and support timely submission of all required materials Draft grant reports and other funder updates using program, financial, and evaluation information provided by staff Track down information and materials needed to complete applications and reports Ensure final submissions are complete and responsive to funder guidelines
Prospect & Opportunity Research:
15% Research foundation, corporate, and government funding opportunities aligned with Vivery Community's programs and priorities Review funding guidelines, eligibility requirements, giving histories, and priorities to assess potential fit Prepare concise research summaries and recommendations for review by the Development Manager Monitor relevant RFPs and funding opportunities and flag strong prospects for consideration Qualifications & Requirements 3+ years of nonprofit grant writing or comparable professional writing experience Exceptional writing and editing skills, with the ability to adapt existing content into concise, compelling narratives for different audiences and requirements Demonstrated experience developing foundation and/or corporate grant proposals; government grant-writing experience a plus Strong research skills and ability to quickly assess funding opportunities for alignment and eligibility Excellent attention to detail, particularly around submission requirements, deadlines, attachments, and word/character limits Ability to synthesize programmatic, financial, and evaluation information into accessible funder-facing language Proficiency with Microsoft Office and online grant application portals Commitment to Vivery Community's mission and advancing equitable access to nutritious food, health, and essential resources Working Conditions Vivery Community is committed to being an equal opportunity organization, and providing employment opportunities regardless of identity, including race, color, national origin, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, disability status, or veteran status.
