Job Duties:

Including but not limited to the following: Ensures all work is performed in accordance with all federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations and within mandated OSHA, SDS, EPA and MassDEP standards. Operates assigned water treatment and processing systems, machinery, and equipment to control the flow, processing, and treatment of water. Operates pretreatment, conditioning, chlorination, and disinfection equipment. Operates pumping stations, pumps, blowers, compressors, generators, tanks, channels, and related equipment. Monitors gauges, meters, control panels, and SCADA systems as assigned; observes variations in operating conditions and responds appropriately. Operates valves and gates either manually or by remote control; starts, stops, and adjusts pumps, engines, generators, and related equipment to maintain system operations. Performs activities related to raw water supply, water treatment, distribution, metering, and backflow prevention. Oversees and assists in the maintenance of the distribution system, including hydrants, valves, water mains, and related infrastructure. Collects water samples and performs testing as required by regulatory agencies and departmental procedures. Maintains shift logs, operational records, maintenance records, and regulatory documentation using modern equipment and technology. Performs routine, preventive, and corrective maintenance on water treatment and distribution equipment. Assists with troubleshooting equipment malfunctions and restoring normal operations. Orders, receives, and maintains chemicals and supplies used in water treatment and disinfection processes. Regularly inspects assigned equipment and facilities and reports deficiencies, failures, or unusual conditions. Responds to after-hours calls involving water system emergencies, leaks, equipment failures, and service interruptions. Assists with emergency response activities involving the water treatment plant and distribution system. Report all accidents and/or safety concerns to the designated supervisor or Town Administrator within two (2) hours of occurrence for non-emergencies. All emergency incidents must be reported immediately. Maintains a positive and professional working relationship with coworkers, Town officials, contractors, and the general public. Performs related work and other duties as assigned.

General Responsibilities:

• Ability to safely operate specialized water treatment and distribution equipment.
• Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions, plans, maps, and sketches.
• Ability to read meters, gauges, recorders, and instrumentation, make operational adjustments, and prepare reports.
• Ability to recognize operational issues and assist in diagnosing and correcting equipment malfunctions.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, commissioners, contractors, and the public.
• Attend training courses, certification programs, workshops, and professional development opportunities as required.
• Commitment to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, safety, and public service.

Requirements/minimum qualifications:

• Must possess and maintain a valid Massachusetts Driver's License.
• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Technical, vocational, college coursework, or degree in water treatment, environmental science, engineering technology, public works, or a related field preferred.
• Experience in the operation and maintenance of water treatment facilities, water distribution systems, utility systems, public works operations, or similar industrial equipment preferred.
• Must possess a Massachusetts Drinking Water Treatment Operator Certification (T1 or higher) at the time of hire.
• Massachusetts Drinking Water Distribution Certification (D1 or higher) preferred.
• Candidates who do not possess all required certifications must demonstrate the ability and willingness to obtain additional certifications within a timeframe established by the Town.
• Must possess basic computer skills and be capable of maintaining electronic operational records and reports.
• Must successfully complete on-the-job training and maintain all required continuing education credits.

Working conditions:

• The physical demands described here are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
• The employee must regularly lift and carry up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
• Must be able to negotiate slopes and uneven terrain, climb ladders, enter confined spaces, and work in below-grade structures.
• Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, including exposure to varying weather conditions.
• May be exposed to chemicals used in water treatment, mechanical equipment, loud noises, and other conditions commonly associated with water treatment and distribution operations.
• Must be available for emergency response outside normal working hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Pay:

$24.09 - $32.00 per hour Expected hours: No less than 40.0 per week
