Job Description

The role of a Public Safety Information Officer is to receive non-emergency phone calls, fields walk-in citizen complaints, and communicates with the Dade City Police Officers through designated radio channels on a 24-hour basis, as well as coordinates for the Department of Public Works & Utilities after normal business hours. Shift and weekend work required. Overtime may be required. This is a mission critical position: Essential employees may be required to work during an undeclared or declared emergency. The City Manager makes the determination on who will be required to work in times of emergency. The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned. Monitors Dade City Police Department and Pasco Sheriff's Office radio channels for radio traffic, communicating with Dade City Officers and initiating calls in CAD system when required. Receives incoming landline calls, obtains essential information, evaluates the situation, and initiates an appropriate response. Responds to citizens' complaints via phone or walk-in and assists the public during stressful, emotional, and/or hostile situations. Enters and removes missing persons and stolen/lost property notices into as well send messages via
FCIC/NCIC
when advised to do so by competent authority. Conducts fingerprinting for citizens and handles non-emergency reports that do not require an officer's response. Monitors in house video security system and card reader locations. Directs all requests obtained to proper authority for appropriate action in a timely manner. Maintains effective working relationships with other employees and facilitates a professional appearance to the public through their conduct and adherence to the uniform dress code.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Acknowledges the rules of proper employee conduct in public and the requirement to follow the City uniform dress code when on the job. Possess the skill, knowledge, and ability to communicate verbally on telephone and radio. Ability to learn the skills required to operate the
FCIC/NCIC
computer and in-house camera system. Proficiency in MS Office, highly preferred. Knowledge of the physical and social characteristics of Dade City. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with other employees and the general public. The ability to deal courteously and fairly with the public and elicit information necessary for proper dispatching from citizens in a distressed or confused condition.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or GED from an accredited institution, required. Experience in a communications environment, preferable law enforcement, preferred.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES
Valid Florida driver's license, required. Within three (3) months of employment obtain the
FCIC/NCIC
Certification as required by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Communications Training Officer until certification is acquired. At which point you will work directly under the Communications Coordinator.

Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to work. Tasks involve extended periods of time at a desk, viewing multiple display screens while accessing, inputting, and retrieving information.

Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate both orally and in writing.

Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions, but within an office environment under stressful conditions.
