General Labor Job Description This role supports the Environmental team by helping to keep the facility, grounds, and property clean, safe, and compliant with environmental regulations. You will perform a variety of physical tasks in both indoor production areas and an outdoor scrap metal yard, including cleaning, material handling, and general upkeep to ensure a well-maintained and efficient operation. Responsibilities Support the Environmental team by maintaining cleanliness and order throughout the facility and grounds. Clean and sweep work areas, walkways, and production spaces to keep the site free of debris and hazards. Move materials and scrap metal safely within the facility and yard using appropriate tools and methods. Eliminate debris and waste by sweeping, shoveling, and properly disposing of trash and recyclable materials. Perform general facility upkeep, including basic maintenance and housekeeping tasks as directed. Work in the scrap metal yard to support production activities as needed. Assist with picking, sorting, and handling scrap materials according to operational requirements. Load and unload shipments, ensuring materials are handled safely and placed in designated areas. Carry out general cleaning and maintenance duties around equipment, production lines, and yard areas. Use pressure washers to clean equipment and maintain a safe and orderly work environment. Follow all safety guidelines while working around heavy machinery, moving parts, and noisy, dusty conditions. Complete additional tasks and duties as assigned by supervisors to support overall operations. Essential Skills At least 1 year of experience working in an outdoor environment such as construction, landscaping, or similar outdoor work. Experience performing general labor tasks, including lifting, carrying, and moving materials. Experience in general construction, landscaping, or comparable physical work environments. Ability to perform cleaning and janitorial duties, including sweeping, shoveling, and general housekeeping. Comfort working in dusty, noisy, and industrial outdoor settings with heavy machinery present. Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience in general construction or outdoor labor-intensive roles. Experience in janitorial or facilities cleaning work. Bilingual Spanish and English communication skills are preferred. Willingness to work overtime, including some Saturdays as needed. Ability to follow safety procedures and wear required personal protective equipment, including steel-toe shoes and safety vests. Why Work Here? Work Environment The role is based at a steel, metal, and auto recycling facility that has operated for over a century. The site includes an indoor production area and a large outdoor yard with heavy machinery, moving parts, loud noise levels, and dusty conditions. You will primarily work in the Joint Products department, which is partially covered under a structure but still closely connected to yard operations. The current shift runs from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with Saturday overtime as needed, typically about two Saturdays per month. This is a physically demanding industrial environment where safety and awareness are essential. The dress code requires steel-toe shoes, long pants, and a plain t-shirt or sweater, with a high-visibility vest worn as the outer layer; vests are provided on-site. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Oakland, CA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $21.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
