Job Title:
Material Handler Job Description This role focuses on order picking, shipping and receiving in a metal manufacturing and distribution environment. You will operate various types of material handling equipment, including forklifts, reach trucks, and cherry pickers, while also assisting in a small manual machine shop to support modifications and alterations to outgoing orders. The position involves frequent lifting, working at heights, and regular interaction with customers and truck drivers. Responsibilities Pick and stage customer orders accurately using RF scanners and warehouse inventory systems. Perform shipping and receiving duties, including loading and unloading trucks, checking in materials, and verifying documentation. Operate sit-down forklifts, reach trucks, and cherry pickers safely to move and store materials in racking up to 15-20 feet high. Wear and properly use a safety harness when operating the picker at elevated heights. Lift and move heavy items, including lifting up to 70 pounds occasionally and 30-45 pounds on a consistent basis, using lifting equipment and team lifting when appropriate. Use UPS and computer-based scanning systems to process shipments and track inventory. Interact professionally with customers and truck drivers when they arrive to pick up or deliver orders, ensuring a positive and efficient experience. Support basic fabrication, welding, and machining activities as needed in the small manual machine shop. Operate basic shop equipment such as drill presses and related tools to make simple alterations or modifications to outgoing orders, once trained. Assist with general warehouse organization, including stocking, labeling, and maintaining clean and orderly racking and work areas. Follow all safety procedures, including the use of PPE such as safety glasses and metatarsal-guarded boots, and adhere to company policies and guidelines. Essential Skills Forklift experience is required, including prior operation of sit-down forklifts in a warehouse or material handling environment. Comfort operating at heights using a reach truck or cherry picker that lifts up to approximately 15-20 feet in the air. Experience with shipping and receiving processes, including order picking and material handling in a warehouse setting. Familiarity with RF scanners or similar handheld devices for inventory and order processing. UPS and computer scanning experience for processing shipments and tracking orders. Ability to interact professionally and clearly with customers and truck drivers during pick-ups and deliveries. Willingness to work in a metal manufacturing and distribution environment that includes a small manual machine shop. Comfort using basic shop tools and equipment such as drill presses and set screws, with training provided. Ability to follow safety procedures, including consistent use of PPE and safety harnesses when working at height. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience as a material handler, warehouse associate, or in a similar logistics role. Previous exposure to metal manufacturing, fabrication, welding, or machining environments. Willingness to learn operation of manual machines in a small machine shop setting. Flexibility to perform a variety of tasks and support different areas of the operation as needed. Strong teamwork and communication skills suited to a small, close-knit branch location. Basic computer literacy for use of shipping software, inventory systems, and scanning tools. Work Environment The position follows a first-shift schedule, working Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for a 40-hour workweek. The environment involves regular material handling and lifting, with weights of 30-45 pounds consistently and up to 70 pounds occasionally, supported by lifting equipment and team lifting practices. You will frequently operate material handling equipment, including sit-down forklifts, reach trucks, and cherry pickers, sometimes working at heights of 15-20 feet. Personal protective equipment is required, including built-in metatarsal-guarded boots or shoes and safety glasses. Material handlers must wear a harness when picking orders at height. The company offers a reimbursement toward the required metatarsal-guarded footwear upon successful completion of the contract-to-hire period, with proof of purchase. Overall, the work environment combines warehouse operations with hands-on machine shop exposure in a small, team-oriented setting. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $21.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
