Join our team at the ECHO Atascadero shelter, where every day brings new opportunities to create positive change! The Shelter Coordinator provides daytime support for the daily operation of the ECHO shelter. The primary responsibility of this position is to serve as the welcoming presence at the shelter's front entrance by answering the front door and assisting clients, donors, volunteers, community members, and other visitors. When not attending to the front door, the Shelter Coordinator provides general oversight within the shelter to help maintain a safe, welcoming, and orderly environment. The position assists clients with general requests and needs, monitors the shelter environment, completes cleaning and maintenance tasks, assists with donations and supplies, and supports the Shelter Manager with the day-to-day operation of the facility.   • Essential Duties & Responsibilities Front Door & Visitor Support 1.
Serve as the primary staff person responsible for answering the front door during daytime hours. 2. Greet all clients, donors, volunteers, community members, service providers, and visitors in a friendly, respectful, and professional manner. 3. Assist visitors with questions, requests, deliveries, donations, and general information. 4. Determine the appropriate staff member or department to assist with requests that fall outside the scope of the position. 5. Monitor entry and exit to the shelter and follow established visitor and safety procedures. Shelter Safety & Oversight 6. Provide general supervision of the shelter area when not attending to the front door. 7. Regularly walk through shelter areas to ensure the environment remains safe, clean, and orderly. 8. Monitor for safety concerns, maintenance issues, client conflicts, or other situations requiring staff attention. 9. Respond appropriately to emergencies and safety concerns and contact management or emergency services when necessary. 10. Utilize de-escalation and trauma-informed care approaches when client issues arise. 11. Help ensure that ECHO policies, shelter rules, and safety expectations are followed. 12. Maintain appropriate confidentiality of client, staff, volunteer, and organizational information. Client Assistance 13. Assist clients with general requests and day-to-day needs. 14. Listen to client concerns and refer issues to the appropriate staff member. 15. Engage clients with dignity, respect, and without judgment. 16. Support a welcoming environment that encourages clients to make positive changes. Cleaning, Maintenance & Facility Support 17. Complete routine cleaning and upkeep throughout the shelter and surrounding areas. 18. Assist with cleaning bathrooms, kitchen and dining areas, common areas, offices, and other shelter spaces. 19. Empty trash, break down boxes, organize supplies, and complete other routine housekeeping tasks. 20. Assist with cleaning client rooms following move-outs, as needed. 21. Complete routine laundry and other shelter-related tasks as assigned. 22. Identify maintenance, repair, cleanliness, or safety concerns and report them to the Operations Manager & Shelter Manager. 23. Assist with basic facility maintenance tasks when appropriate and within the employee's abilities. 24. Help maintain an organized and welcoming shelter environment. Donations & Supplies 25. Receive and assist with community donations delivered to the shelter. 26. Help organize donations, supplies, donation areas, closets, and storage spaces. 27. Assist with monitoring shelter supplies and communicate items that need to be replenished. 28. Assist with receiving deliveries and directing them to the appropriate location. Communication & Daily Operations 29. Communicate important client, facility, safety, maintenance, or operational concerns to the Operations Manager or appropriate staff member. 30. Respond to telephone calls, messages, inquiries, and requests and route them appropriately. 31. Maintain clear and timely notes regarding significant incidents, concerns, or activities as required. 32. Attend staff meetings, trainings, and other meetings as assigned. 33. Assist with shelter activities, resident meetings, or programs as needed. 34. Ensure the safety of the clients, volunteers, and shelter. 35. Driving to meetings, events and for supplies is a required duty for this position. 36. Other duties as assigned as assigned by supervisor.
  • Knowledge, Skills, Talents, & Abilities 1.
Provide respectful engagement to adults with histories of chronic homelessness, serious psychiatric disabilities, and co-occurring substance use disorders. 2. Provide culturally competent support to a diverse population. 3. Use de-escalation skills & trauma informed care approach when issues arise. 4. Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to interact with all departments/levels of the organization and outside third parties in a highly professional manner. 5. Ability to work with diverse populations including those facing challenges in the areas of mental health, domestic violence, child welfare services and aging. 6. Excellent time-management and organizational skills with the ability to work independently and take initiative. 7. Calm demeanor; Able to work under pressure; Able to respond to a crisis situation, health or safety issue and take appropriate and immediate action. 8. Able to maintain a high-level privacy and confidentiality of employees', guests' and clients' information. 9. Knowledge of universal precautions and what constitutes a medical or situational emergency. 10. Understanding of mandated reporting laws. 11. Must be professional, flexible, friendly, and work as a team player. 12. Assume ownership for accomplishing assignments, requests and tasks. 13. Intermediate knowledge of Office Suite, including WORD, EXCEL, and PowerPoint.
  • Education and/or Experience
  • High school diploma/GED, depending on experience.
  • Minimum of one years' experience in health and human services
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Minimum of one to two years' experience in health and human services
  • Must possess a valid California Driver's License.
  • Must have a reliable vehicle, clean driving record, and proof of insurance.
  • Must be willing to travel throughout San Luis Obispo County.

Variable work environment; work is conducted both indoors and outdoors with varying environmental conditions; door to indoor facilities often kept open, so warm clothing is required when working at night. The Admin Offices are located upstairs, with only stairway access. Noise level varies from quiet office environment to very noisy shelter and dining hall.
