Valid and current Rhode Island Occupational Therapy Assistant License issued by the Rhode Island Department of Health Two to three years of experience in a school setting or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of Rhode Island State assessment procedures, IDEA, Section 504, and relevant educational laws. SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the direct supervision of the OTR/L, the Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) is responsible for providing occupational therapy services to students aged 3-22 across preschool, elementary, middle, and high school levels, as outlined in Individual Education Programs (IEPs) or 504 Plans. The COTA assesses student needs, develops and implements therapy plans, and collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to support student participation in academic and functional school tasks. The role includes maintaining accurate records, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations, and fostering an inclusive educational environment for the local education agencies which service the Scituate, Glocester, and Foster-Glocester Region School Departments.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1.
Direct Services:
Conduct occupational therapy evaluations and provide services to students as outlined in IEPs or 504 Plans. Develop and implement sensory, motor, self-help, and fine motor/visual activities to enhance learning and independence. Adapt classroom environments, materials, and activities to support student participation and access to education. 2.
Evaluation & Meetings:
Perform standardized and non-standardized assessments to identify student needs and monitor progress. Participate in referral meetings for students potentially requiring occupational therapy services. Participate in post-evaluation team discussions, IEP/504 Plan development, and progress review meetings. Provide detailed reports and recommendations based on assessment data and student performance. 3.
Documentation & Billing:
Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential records, including evaluation reports, progress notes, and treatment logs. Contribute to data collection for progress monitoring and goal achievement. Ensure compliance with Medicaid and state billing requirements while adhering to HIPAA standards. 4.
Collaboration & Support:
Work closely with teachers, speech therapists, physical therapists, psychologists, and administrators to support student needs. Consult with school staff and families to provide strategies, accommodations, and training for student success. Attend team meetings, professional development sessions, and parent conferences as required. Communicate regularly with the supervising OTR/L to ensure the ongoing progress of the student caseload. 5.
Program Development:
Create and update occupational therapy protocols and intervention plans tailored to student needs. Maintain electronic and hard-copy records for student therapy plans and progress tracking. Contribute to the development of district-wide special education initiatives. 6.
Compliance & Advocacy:
Ensure adherence to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Section 504, and Rhode Island educational regulations. Advocate for student needs and promote inclusive practices within the school environment. 7.
Additional Responsibilities:
Travel between school sites within the Foster-Glocester Regional School District as needed and as described above.
