The Occupational Therapist provides specialized services to students with disabilities to promote functional independence and participation in educational activities in the local education agencies which service the Scituate, Glocester, and Foster-Glocester Region School Departments. Responsibilities include assessing student needs, developing and implementing individualized intervention plans, collaborating with educators and families, and maintaining accurate records in compliance with state and federal regulations. 1.Student Assessments:
Conduct evaluations to assess students' fine motor, sensory processing, visual-motor integration, and self-care skills to determine eligibility for occupational therapy services. 2. Individualized Education Plans (IEPs): Develop, implement, and monitor occupational therapy goals and interventions as part of students' IEPs, ensuring alignment with educational objectives. 3.Direct Therapy Services:
Provide individual and group therapy sessions to improve students' functional abilities, including motor skills, sensory regulation, and daily living skills. 4.Collaboration:
Work closely with teachers, speech therapists, physical therapists, and other staff to integrate therapy strategies into classroom routines and activities. 5.Consultation:
Offer guidance to parents, teachers, and paraprofessionals on accommodations, modifications, and strategies to support student success in school environments. 6.Assistive Technology:
Recommend and implement adaptive equipment or assistive technology to enhance student participation and independence. 7.Documentation:
Maintain accurate records of assessments, progress notes, and therapy outcomes in compliance with Rhode Island Department of Education and federal IDEA regulations. 8. Submit Medicaid and other billing documentation in accordance with school and state requirements while maintaining HIPAA compliance. 9.Training and Professional Development:
Provide training to school staff on topics such as sensory strategies, fine motor development, and the use of adaptive tools. 10.Transition Planning:
Support students transitioning between grade levels or to post-secondary settings by addressing functional skill needs. 11.Compliance:
Ensure all services adhere to state and federal special education laws, including timely submission of required reports and documentation. 12.Team Participation:
Attend IEP meetings, multidisciplinary team meetings, and other relevant school meetings to advocate for students' needs. 13.Program Development:
Assist in developing school-wide initiatives to promote inclusive practices and sensory-friendly environments. 14.Crisis Intervention:
Support students with sensory or behavioral challenges by implementing de-escalation techniques and sensory interventions as needed.School-based Occupational Therapist:
Supervision of Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant (COTA): Responsible for the supervision of the school-based COTA to support students ages 3-22 in achieving functional goals in academic, social, and daily living activities, and ensuring the quality and safety of occupational therapy services, providing guidance and support, and fostering the COTA's professional development Adheres to state regulations and ethical guidelines regarding supervision. Accountable for the overall outcomes of the COTA's work, including documentation and billing.Additional Requirements:
Travel between school sites if needed. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
