SMART legal interns will conduct a variety of legal research and analysis related to sex offender registration and notification laws, including assisting the SMART Office with enhancing an internal database of the differences among jurisdictions' registration and notification statutes and programs. Interns will also get exposure to speaking with law enforcement personnel and attorneys at the state, tribe, and U.S. territory level. Interns may be asked to assist policy advisors with reviewing statutes, regulations, draft and/or final legislation and providing an analysis of how these documents impact a jurisdiction's implementation of SORNA. This is NOT a remote Internship. This internship will be in-person at the Washington, DC location.

Qualifications:

Must be a U.S. citizen. Law student MUST be enrolled at least half-time and have completed at least one semester of law school from an accredited institution. Part-time law students and joint-degree candidates may also apply. First-year (second semester), second- and third-year law students are encouraged to apply. Availability to participate for full duration of the internship. Commitment of 12 hours per week for 10 consecutive weeks, flexibility in both scheduling and hours. Prior to entry on duty, all interns must undergo a suitability/fitness determination based on information provided in their pre-employment paperwork. Drug Testing may be required prior to entry on duty.

Preferred Qualification:

Superior research skills, LexisNexis and/or Westlaw proficiency, an eye for detail, and a desire to work as part of a small team of professionals.

Salary:

Volunteer (uncompensated). Course credit, work-study, and externship opportunities are available depending on school requirements. Number of Positions 2
