The Production Manager plans, coordinates, and executes the physical, technical, and logistical elements of live events, attractions, exhibitions, and experiential productions. Working under the direction of the Producer, this role converts approved creative concepts, scopes, budgets, and schedules into practical production plans and ensures that each project is delivered safely, efficiently, on time, within the authorized budget, and to the established quality standard.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support the development, production and execution of all aspects of live events, marketing activations and entertainment projects as assigned.
- Develop operational plans and SOPs to support the efficient and successful execution of productions and projects.
- Hire, train and manage operational teams.
- Review approved concepts, designs, scopes, contracts, budgets, and project requirements, then translate them into actionable production plans.
- Develop and maintain workback schedules, labor calls, delivery plans, installation timelines, rehearsal schedules, run-of-show documents, and strike plans.
- Coordinate scenic fabrication, staging, lighting, audio, video, rigging, power, equipment rentals, transportation, specialty contractors, and production labor.
- Serve as the primary day-to-day production contact for vendors, venues, department heads, technicians, installers, and internal project teams.
- Obtain and evaluate estimates, recommend cost-effective production solutions, confirm vendor deliverables, and monitor vendor performance against scope and schedule.
- Track production expenses, purchase commitments, labor costs, rentals, and invoices; promptly report anticipated overruns, savings, substitutions, or change-order needs to the Producer.
- Conduct site walks and assess access, loading, storage, utilities, weather exposure, back-of-house needs, operating conditions, and other venue constraints.
- Coordinate required permits, insurance certificates, technical documentation, safety plans, inspections, and vendor certifications in partnership with qualified consultants and authorities.
- Lead load-in, installation, technical rehearsals, event operations, maintenance, strike, and load-out while keeping all departments aligned with the production schedule.
- Supervise production coordinators, department heads, technicians, stagehands, installers, temporary staff, and other assigned personnel; communicate clear assignments and expectations.
- Promote a safe, organized work environment by conducting briefings, enforcing site procedures, documenting incidents, and addressing hazards promptly.
- Verify that installed elements and technical systems meet approved designs, specifications, operational requirements, and quality expectations before opening or turnover.
- Troubleshoot technical, logistical, staffing, vendor, and site-related issues calmly and decisively, escalating material creative, financial, contractual, or client-impacting decisions.
- Provide concise progress reports, document changes to scope or schedule, maintain accurate production records, and complete post-event evaluations and reconciliations.
Qualified candidates should be composed, solutions-oriented leaders who can manage complex productions, communicate clearly, and exercise sound judgment in fast-moving environments.
Candidates should also demonstrate:
- At least five years of production-management experience in live events, attractions, exhibitions, experiential activations, festivals, theater, or a related field.
- Experience managing projects from pre-production through installation, operation, and strike, including multiple vendors and concurrent deadlines.
- Working knowledge of technical production, scenic fabrication, event logistics, labor planning, equipment rentals, venue operations, and production budgeting.
- The ability to interpret site plans, technical drawings, schedules, estimates, and vendor proposals, with proficiency in common office and project-management platforms.
- Strong leadership, communication, negotiation, organization, and problem-solving skills; a valid driver's license; and the flexibility to travel and work evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended production hours.
