Position:

The College of Liberal Arts invites applications for a tenure-track, 9-month position for an Assistant Professor of African American History in the Department of History. Preferred start date August 2027.

Qualifications:

PhD in History or related fields required. ABD applicants considered, but appointment will be at the 'Instructor' rank and all degree requirements must be completed by February 1, 2028. Research specialization in African American History from the Colonial Era to 1900, all geographic areas of specialization are welcome. Demonstrated excellence in teaching in applicant's field of specialization. Demonstrated scholarship and active research agenda.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be expected to teach and develop upper- and lower-level courses in African American History as well as in their other areas of specialization. Towson University and the Department of History are transitioning to the research-intensive R2 status, and candidates will be expected to contribute to this move and to pursue grant-based scholarship as outlined in the University's mission and strategic plan . The normal teaching load is 3-3, with a reduced 2-3 load for the first year. The successful candidate will commit to active participation and service to the department, college, and university.

Salary and Benefits:

Targeted salary range: $72,000-75,000 commensurate with experience.
