Minimum Education/Training/Experience Education:
Certificate in a related technical discipline (e.g., maritime structural fitting, welding, or shipbuilding fabrication), or 1 year at Associate degree (completed at least 1 year toward an Associate Degree in Marine Engineering or Welding Technology) or the equivalent combination of education (HS/GED), technical certifications or trainings (NCCER Maritime Structural Fitter, AWS welding codes, marine welding standards).
Experience:
1-3 years of directly related experience as Class 1 shipfitter, maritime fabricator or shipbuilding fabrication technologies, or 3+ years experience in shipfitting, structural fitting, or related maritime trades.
Preferred Education/Training/Experience Associates of Arts/Associates of Science in related technical discipline.
NCCER Level 2 certification in maritime structural fitter
Minimum Knowledge & Skills Strong knowledge of ship construction methods, materials, and safety protocols.
Ability to interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
Experienced with layouts, metal structural parts fabrication for plates, bulkheads, and frames, and bracing in position within hull of ship for riveting or welding.
Ability to prepare molds and templates for fabrication of nonstandard parts.
Metallurgy and materials science knowledge as it pertains to maritime technologies.
Welding, rigging, structural fitting experience in maritime technologies/shipyard.
Strong math and measurement skills, including fractions and tape measure reading (standard and metric).
Preferred Knowledge & Skills 3-5 years experience as 1st class shipfitter or 1-3 years as class 2.
Knowledge of equipment, work processes, and techniques used in maritime technologies.
Excellent communication skills and a student-centered teaching approach.
Commitment to fostering an inclusive, respectful, and motivating learning environment.
Prior teaching or training experience preferred
Job Duties Deliver engaging classroom, laboratory, and hands-on instruction in Maritime technologies topics.
Prepare lesson plans, instructional materials, demonstrations, and practical exercises in accordance with the approved course curriculum.
Teach students to interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and welding symbols for maritime applications.
Demonstrate safe and efficient use of tools, machinery, and measuring equipment in compliance with OSHA and maritime safety standards.
Incorporate real-world examples from shipyards, dry docks, and repair facilities to bring lessons to life.
Collaborate with program coordinators to align curriculum with current industry practices and emerging technologies
Demonstrate the proper use of tools, equipment, and instruments.
Evaluate participant performance through written assessments, skills demonstrations, and practical exercises.
Maintain accurate attendance, assessment, and course completion records.
Foster a safe, inclusive, and professional learning environment.
Ensure compliance with all college policies and applicable health and safety regulations.
Maintain laboratory equipment, tools, and instructional materials in good working order.
Incorporate current industry standards, technologies, and best practices into instruction.
Participate in instructor orientations, required meetings, and professional development activities.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Licensing/Certification Requirements AWS (D1/D1.5, FCAW, SMAW, GMAW), NCCER Structural Fitter Level 2 or
ABS/NAVSEA
Physical Requirements Positions in this class typically require: stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions
Sedentary Work:
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
