Job Summary The Library Assistant III plays a vital role in supporting the daily operations of the Eugene McDermott Library. This position has openings on both the first and second shifts. The first shift typically works Monday through Friday from 6:30 AM to 3:30 PM, while the second shift typically works Monday through Friday from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM, with possible seasonal adjustments based on library hours and operational needs. Depending on assigned shift, this role is responsible for supporting either the opening or closing operations of the library and ensuring public service areas are prepared for daily use. The position supports patrons, student workers, and daily public service operations, including the Copy Center, Circulation Desk, Multimedia, Study Rooms, Campus Delivery, and Information Desk. Responsibilities include staffing service desks, providing customer service, maintaining visitor check-in statistics, supporting physical access and library security, monitoring building and equipment functionality, and ensuring library policies and procedures are followed. Closing shift responsibilities may include securing public service areas, addressing facility concerns, and assisting with end-of-day operational procedures.

Note:

Hours during the two-week training period may differ from the standard schedule. Minimum Education and Experience High school diploma or equivalent. Experience working in a library, academic, customer service, or public-facing environment.

Experience assisting patrons with technology, equipment, or information resources.

Experience training, mentoring, or supervising student employees or staff.

Experience using library databases, library systems, or similar information management systems. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Basicputer skills, including familiarity with email, internet browsers, and standard office software and equipment.

Familiarity with library databases and information technology.

Strong customer service skills and ability to resolveplex patron needs.

Ability to guide and support student workers in a collaborative team environment.

Commitment to providing a weing and supportive environment for all library users.

Excellentanizational skills and attention to detail in managing resources and resolving issues. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Public Services & Patron Support

Serve as the primary point of contact at multiple service points, including Circulation, Multimedia, Study Rooms, Copy Center, Campus Delivery, and the Information Desk.

Assist patrons with accounts, locating materials, and using the catalog and .

Provide support to users via email, phone, and chat. Student Supervision & Mentorship

Mentor, supervise, and support student workers.

Assist with maintaining and updating training documentation.

Building Oversight & Security Coordination

Support daily building operations and help coordinate with Library Security and Facilities during incidents or disruptions.

Ensure study spaces and public areas are monitored, maintained, and reset throughout the shift.

Technology & Equipment Troubleshooting

Address technical issues involving Smart Rooms, multimedia equipment, copiers, and ers.

Handleplex transactions using library systems.

Troubleshoot Smart Room and equipment issues and escalate to Library IT when necessary.

Communication & Collaboration

Work closely with library departments and campus partners to ensure seamless public service and efficient operations.

Incident Response

Respond appropriately to patron concerns, behavioral issues, emergencies, and building incidents following library procedures.

Operational Support

Assist with opening, closing, and shift transition procedures to ensure continuity of service. Physical Demands and Working Conditions Must be capable of lifting, carrying, and managing materials weighing up to 15lbs.

Ability to stand or sit for prolonged periods while performing various tasks.

Physical Activities Working Conditions Additional Information Schedule:

This position has two vacancies, with one assigned to the first shift (Monday through Friday, 6:30 AM to 3:30 PM) and one assigned to the second shift (Monday through Friday, 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM). Both schedules may include seasonal adjustments during the Winter and Summer months to reflect changes in library hours.
