No Location CountyAlbany Street AddressOffice of Cultural Education NYS Museum CityAlbany StateNY Zip Code12234 Job Specifics Duties DescriptionThe New York State Education Department's Office of Cultural Education is seeking candidates for a Museum Instructor position within the Museum Education Unit of the New York State Museum (NYSM). The NYSM provides programs and lessons to over 70,000 students each year, designed to enhance their understanding of the NYSM exhibits and artifacts. These programs assist schools to increase their emphasis on object and inquiry based learning to help students achieve the New York State Learning Standards. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Plan and deliver NYSM classes, instructional programs and public programs;
- Schedule and provide classroom instruction sessions, both face to face and via distance learning formats, utilizing technology methods in coordination with other Museum Instructors;
- Develop teacher guides, instructional lessons, programs and techniques for classroom use based on New York State Learning Standards with an emphasis on utilization of the NYSM's collections and exhibits;
- Participate in the development of NYSM exhibits;
- Conduct research, collect and review reading materials and work with NYSM Scientists in preparation for the development and delivery of classroom lessons;
- Prepare necessary teaching aids, promotional and informational booklets and materials for use by school teachers to supplement or substitute for direct NYSM classroom instruction;
- Assist with preparations for major NYSM special events;
- Develop curriculum for NYSM's summer programming initiatives;
- Provide programs and services to the Thomas O'Brien Academy for Science;
- Develop programming to support the NYSM's Museum Club after school enrichment program; and
- Assist in the maintenance, procurement and organization of the teaching collections.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
NY HELPS This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of theNY HELPS
Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired underNY HELPS
will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in aNY HELPS
title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.NON-COMPETITIVE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
To be considered for appointment through NY HELPS, or 55 b/c, candidates must meet the open-competitive minimum qualifications for this position.The qualifications are:
- A bachelor's degree or higher AND
- One (1) year of full-time experience in the development and/or implementation of educational or public programming in the subjects of history, art, or the sciences within a museum or cultural institution
COMPETITIVE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service as a Museum Instructor.Eligible List Appointment:

This position is eligible for 55b/c designation and candidates with 55b/c eligibility are encouraged to apply. Candidates must possess a current 55b/c eligibility letter and meet the minimum qualifications as follows:- A bachelor's degree or higher AND
- One (1) year of full-time experience in the development and/or implementation of educational or public programming in the subjects of history, art, or the sciences within a museum or cultural institution
PERFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Special consideration will be given to candidates who possess the following qualifications:- Experience in the implementation of educational programming for students or educators that supports the New York State Learning Standards in a cultural institution.
- Experience in collaboration with content specialists in the fields of science, history, or art to create education or public programming within a cultural institution.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
This will be a permanent, competitive appointment or a permanent non-competitive appointment. At this time, agencies may recruit and hire employees by making temporary appointments. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Verification of education and experience will be required at the time of interview for all candidates. This position leads to a maximum salary of $68,630 based on annual performance advances.APPLICATION
