Position Overview The Child Development Assistant supports the Child Development Specialist in providing education and developmental activities for children from birth through age four in the Family Support Center or childcare center. The assistant helps create a safe, nurturing environment, observes children's development, supports individualized learning plans, and encourages parents' participation in their children's learning. This position does not supervise staff, interns, or volunteers. The Director may assign additional duties to support program operations. Essential Responsibilities Help plan and carry out daily and monthly activities that align with the curriculum, children's developmental needs, and program philosophy. Support each child's emotional, social, physical, and cognitive development. Assist with developmental observations, assessments, anecdotal records, and individualized learning plans. Share information about children's progress with parents through regular communication, written reports, and parent conferences, as directed by the Child Development Specialist. Facilitate activities that engage children and their parents together. Set up and maintain a safe, healthy, and welcoming learning environment. Identify damaged materials and equipment and report replacement needs. Maintain accurate attendance, incident reports, child records, and other required documentation while protecting confidentiality. Follow applicable licensing requirements, program procedures, and child safety and reporting requirements. Participate in staff meetings, training, workshops, and program events. Additional Responsibilities Assist with lesson plans, classroom schedules, room arrangements, and child portfolios. Support child development workshops for teen parents. Help identify classroom and playground materials needed for the program. Respond to parents with sensitivity and respect. Perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Knowledge of child growth and development from birth through age four. Early childhood education training or credentials appropriate to the assigned program and applicable licensing requirements. Relevant qualifications may include approved coursework or clock hours, a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential, a state equivalent credential, or an associate degree in a related field with early childhood education coursework. Experience working effectively with children, families, and colleagues from diverse backgrounds. CPR and First Aid certification, or the ability to obtain and maintain certification as required for the role. Strong communication, organization, recordkeeping, and teamwork skills. Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately when a child or family is in crisis. Physical Demands and Working Conditions The position involves standing, sitting, bending, stooping, squatting, and moving with young children. The employee must be able to lift up to 55 pounds. Occasional driving and exposure to outdoor weather, bodily fluids, and communicable illnesses may occur.
