DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH, KINESIOLOGY, AND SPORT ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF EXERCISESCIENCE TWO TENURE TRACK POSITIONS AVAILABLE AUGUST 15, 2027 THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH, KINESIOLOGY, AND SPORT
in the College of Education and Professional Studies at the University of South Alabama invites applicants for two full-time,tenure-track faculty positions inExercise Science:
one at the rank of Assistant Professor and one at the rank of Assistant or AssociateProfessor. Both appointments are nine-month positions beginning August 15, 2027.RESPONSIBILITIES
include engaging inscholarly research and publication related to the candidate's expertise in Exercise Science; seeking external funding to support research;teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in the exercise science program as assigned by the Department Chair; providing academicadvisement; recruiting and mentoring master's- and doctoral-level graduate students; participating in curriculum development; and providingservice to the Department, College, and University. The successful applicant must display the ability to employ effective teachingpractices, provide experiential student learning opportunities, and engage in program-related community engagement.REQUIREDQUALIFICATIONS
include: 1. an earned doctorate in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, or a closely related discipline. ABDs will beconsidered at the Assistant Professor level as long as the degree is earned by the start date; 2. demonstrated skills and/orexperience in teaching, research, and service, with the ideal candidate complementing our existing programs and faculty and being able towork effectively on a research team; 3. evidence of consistent and sustained scholarly productivity in peer-reviewed academicjournals commensurate with rank; 4. evidence of or plan for seeking external funding for research; 5. evidence of orpotential for successfully advising graduate students to degree completion; 6. experience in or plan for leading or serving ondissertation committees; and 7. the ability to work collaboratively with other research faculty to sustain an environment conduciveto the success of doctoral students.For associate professor consideration:
1. evidence of receiving tenure at aregionally accredited institution of higher education; and 2. cohesive research agenda with clearly articulated path to seeking fullprofessorship.DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
for either rank include a record of publications and/or experience in research spanningthe field of exercise science, including exercise physiology, cardiovascular and pulmonary responses and adaptations, clinical exercisescience, health-related fitness, stress testing, exercise prescription, and biomechanics. Competency in phlebotomy procedures and basic wetlab techniques is desired but not required. Demonstrated leadership activities and/or certifications from ACSM, NSCA, or other relatedorganizations are preferred. Preference will be given to candidates whose research complements the existing strengths of the exercisescience faculty. Broadly, current initiatives/projects include examining cardiovascular, biochemical, neuromuscular, and bodycomposition-related changes to various exercise and nutrition interventions.THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH, KINESIOLOGY, AND SPORT
currently serves more than 650 students and includes 15 full-time faculty members, consisting of 9 tenured faculty, 4 tenure-trackfaculty, 2 non-tenure-track instructional faculty, as well as 3 staff members, 16 graduate assistants, and 15 adjuncts. The Departmentoffers undergraduate programs in Exercise Science, Health and Physical Education teacher education, Sport Management and Recreation Studies,Recreational Therapy, and Health Promotion. Graduate programs include master's degrees in Exercise Science, Health and Physical Educationteacher education, Health Promotion, and Sport Management, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Exercise Science and Performance Nutrition (firstimplemented Fall 2023). The Department is home to the Exercise and Nutrition Research Group (ENRG) at the University of SouthAlabama, which comprises a cluster of well-equipped, collaborative laboratories capable of supporting a wide array of exercise- andnutrition-related research, teaching, community outreach, and service-learning activities. Current laboratory capabilities include equipmentfor body composition (BodPod, DXA, 3D scanner, BIA/BIS, hydrostatic weighing), neuromuscular (HUMAC Norm dynamometer, EMG, nervestimulation, force plate, Tensiomyography via the TMG S2 device, Magstim BiStim2 for peripheral nerve and transcranial stimulation, andMyotonPro, a portable device for measuring biomechanical and viscoelastic properties of soft tissue), cardiovascular (NIRS, ultrasound,blood flow restriction cuffs, SphygmoCor, EKG), metabolic/pulmonary (metabolic cart with exercise and REE capability, spirometry), andbiochemical/molecular (rtPCR system, microplate reader, pipetting robot, electrophoresis, microscopy equipment, freezers) assessments. Anassortment of other equipment is available for exercise testing, including cycle ergometers (Velotron, Monark, iWorx equipment), treadmills,a fully equipped collegiate weight room, and other basic exercise and laboratory equipment.THE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION ANDPROFESSIONAL STUDIES
