Teachers are responsible for using a classical Christian education model to teach students, develop virtue, and help each student grow into the individual God intends. Lessons are carefully planned to inspire and motivate students and to support them in reaching the learning outcomes. A successful teacher creates a nurturing environment where all students feel known and valued. The Science Teacher teaches Upper School AP Environmental Science and Marine Biology courses using a Christian classical education model to implement an individualized, highly academic, enriched curriculum. Additionally, all subjects and daily activities are centered on a Christian worldview. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Approach classroom instruction and student interactions from a Christian worldview Collaborate with grade-level teams and department members to plan and implement the school's liberal arts curriculum Actively ensure academic growth in every student by utilizing a variety of instructional techniques Build positive partnership with parents through proactive communication Create a predictable and supportive classroom environment Increase professional knowledge by participating in professional development opportunities Plan and develop engaging, age-appropriate course of study in the classroom, adhering to educational best practices and prepare daily and weekly lesson plans to help students meet the learning goals Follow through on routine job responsibilities including grading, record keeping, attendance, and lesson planning Participate in collaborative evaluation processes with Division Head and Vice President for Academic Affairs Attend weekly faculty meetings Be involved in at least one co- or extra-curricular responsibility Attend school events outside regular school hours including, but not limited to Parent/Teacher Conferences, Curriculum Night, arts performances, student socials, open houses, and professional development sessions Keep classroom neat and pleasant in appearance Monitor halls, study periods, and lunchrooms with other faculty and staff Enforce safety and security standards for students, staff, and visitors Perform other related duties as assigned Specific Duties and Responsibilities Set up and conduct laboratory experiments, ensuring safety protocols are followed Maintain and organize lab materials, chemicals, and equipment Integrate hands-on activities and demonstrations into lessons to reinforce theoretical concepts Foster a sense of wonder and curiosity about the natural world, encouraging students to explore science as a means of deepening their faith in, and understanding of, the character and power of God (Romans 1:20) Promote consideration and discussion of ethical issues in science as well as environmental stewardship Stay up to date with advancements in scientific fields relevant to your curriculum Serve as a positive role model of a Christian engaged in science Supervisory Responsibilities None Bachelor's degree required; a degree in science or a related field is preferred. Teaching experience preferred Familiarity or experience with the classical Christian education model preferred Hold CPR/A ED/First Aid certification (with epinephrine autoinjector supplement) or obtain certification within 90 days of employment start date Currently authorized to work in the United States for any employer (sponsorship is not available for this position) Thorough understanding of pedagogy and the best practices of education Desire to teach upper school-aged children and ability to adapt to their developmental status Ability to design lessons that teach curriculum in an engaging manner, applying various teaching methods such as lectures, discussions, demonstrations, and individual or collaborative projects and research Strong supervisory and leadership skills to manage and control the classroom Excellent verbal and written communication skills Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven ability to maintain professionalism and tact in high-stress situations Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail Creative analytical and problem-solving skills Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software Critical Performance Competencies Positively support the school's policies and practices and work collaboratively in a professional organization Truthful, positive, and purposeful when communicating with others Able to use strong written and oral communication skills to transfer thoughts and express ideas Flexible and adaptable in dealing with new, different, or changing requirements Maintain confidentiality and security of information Hold self and others accountable to accomplish results Effective in handling multiple concurrent tasks Adhere to biblical standards in all areas of conduct Physical Requirements Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer or standing to teach Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times Must be able to traverse classroom and adjust one's tone and height, by bending or leaning, in order to teach each child Work in a climate-controlled office with travel outdoors between buildings
