Job Description

Title:
SER TEACHER

(ED/BD)

Reports to: Special Education Administrators and Building Principal

Position Summary:

The SER Teacher provides an optimal learning environment for students with social, emotional and behavioral needs.

Qualifications:
Required:

Bachelor's degree in High Incidence Special Education

Currently hold or be eligible for a Kansas certificate in respective content area

Demonstrated knowledge of methods of effective instruction

Desire and ability to work with students and staff

A willingness to cooperate with and follow the directions of the school principal

The ability and willingness to communicate with parents

Ability to plan, organize, and see that activities are completed

Proficient in data collection and reporting

Excellent written and oral skills

Proficient in Microsoft and Google applications

Preferred:

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in a related field.

Valid Teaching Certificate with applicable level area endorsements.

5+ years of directly related verifiable experience in Special Education.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Facilitates student learning for the purpose of achieving success in academics, social skill awareness, appropriate behavior and problem solving.

Collaborates with school teams (administrative staff, general and special education teachers, related service providers and paraeducators) in the planning and implementation of strategies and interventions for students with behavioral and/or mental health needs.

Manages student behavior for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment.

Develops and implements IEPs.

Collects and organizes data on student behavior and academic goals for progress monitoring and quarterly IEP progress reports.

Holds annual IEP meetings and 3-year re-evaluation meetings.

Communicates with parents regularly.

Supervises the delivery of special education services by assigned para-educators.

Adapts and modifies curriculum for special education students in general education classes.

Assists in conducting Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs) and developing Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs).

Implements BIPs for the purpose of providing an effective program that addresses individual student needs.

Monitors student progress.

Provides crisis intervention.

Supports classroom teachers for the purpose of assisting them in the implementation of individual student IEPs and BIPs.

Ensures activities conform to Federal, State and District regulations and/or guidelines.

Performs other duties and assumes other responsibilities as assigned by Special Education Administrators and Building Principal.

General Responsibilities:

Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment for learning.

Communicates with parents and counselors on a student's progress.

Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.

Participates in faculty committees and sponsorship of pupil activities.

Maintains professional competence through in-service education provided by the district, and in self-selected professional growth activities related to elementary education.

Ensures that all activities conform to district guidelines.

Communicates effectively with all members of the school district and community.

Works effectively with community organizations.

Reacts to change productively and handles other tasks as assigned.

Supports the value of education.

Supports the mission and vision of USD #458.

Keeps abreast of new information, best practices, innovative ideas, and techniques.

Adheres to all district health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.

Other duties as assigned by the Principal, or other Administrative Staff.

Physical Requirements:
  • Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed in the work environment. Regular attendance and/or physical presence at the job is required.
  • Must have physical stamina to maintain job responsibilities.
  • Requires occasional stooping, bending, kneeling, reaching, and turning.

Term of Employment:

10 months (188 Days); Academic school year as assigned.

Evaluation:

Performance effectiveness will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of Kansas Statutes and Board of Education Policy.
