A Special Education Teacher teaches students who have disabilities, and adapts teaching methods to meet the needs of students. Assesses students and helps to develop individualized education plans that specify the services and accommodations needed for each student. Works in a classroom that includes only students with IEPs, or works with students and teachers in regular classes. For students with severe disabilities, may focus on developing skills for independent living. Works as part of a team that includes therapists, school counselors or social workers.

QUALIFICATIONS
Must be qualified and certified to teach in the State of Michigan and possess the necessary educational background and certification for the position as determined by the district. Must have teaching certification or endorsement as a teacher of the learning disabled or emotionally impaired for 7th grade-8th grade secondary; special education certification required. Highly qualified status for math; multiple endorsements preferred. Be willing and able to deliver effective classroom instruction that results in student learning and growth. Experience in teaching middle school students preferred. Have a strong desire to work with special education students and their parents. Be willing to participate in a variety of extra-curricular and co-curricular activities including staff development, curriculum development, and clubs. Be willing to work as part of a building team for the improvement of instruction and to produce successful learners. Be open to continuous change. Be an excellent communicator with students, parents, and colleagues. Demonstrate mental/physical ability and stamina for meeting the requirements of the position. The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the District and is expected to maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance. Employees will perform related duties as assigned.
