A Special Education Teacher teaches students who have disabilities, and adapts teaching methods to meet the needs of students. Assesses students and helps to develop individualized education plans that specify the services and accommodations needed for each student. Works in a classroom that includes only students with IEPs, or works with students and teachers in regular classes. For students with severe disabilities, may focus on developing skills for independent living. Works as part of a team that includes therapists, school counselors or social workers.

September 01, 2026 Learn more about our instructional calendar & paid holidays by clicking HERE Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: providing high-quality instruction to secondary students in a classroom environment that promotes critical thinking, a high level of engagement and eagerness to continue to learn and grow; working collaboratively with other teachers and community members to ensure continued learning of relevant skills and authentic application of those skills; supporting students as they develop a strong work ethic, pride in their work and the foundational skills employers have identified; willingness to develop/grow/promote the program to include all learners; and differentiating instruction to ensure all students experience success. Must hold a commitment to promoting equity, practicing cultural responsiveness, and creating inclusive environments. Job Qualifications Candidates must have current NYS certification in Special Education K-6 or K-12. Candidates should possess a broad skill set of effective teaching and learning to engage learners of all levels, including but not limited to knowledge of the NYS Learning Standards and Assessments; knowledge of curriculum content and accepted methods of instruction; ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team; and excellent written and oral communication skills.
