A Special Education Teacher teaches students who have disabilities, and adapts teaching methods to meet the needs of students. Assesses students and helps to develop individualized education plans that specify the services and accommodations needed for each student. Works in a classroom that includes only students with IEPs, or works with students and teachers in regular classes. For students with severe disabilities, may focus on developing skills for independent living. Works as part of a team that includes therapists, school counselors or social workers.

  • Position Overview
  • The
  • paraeducator
  • provides instructional, behavioral, and supervision support to students under the direction of a certified teacher. This role is essential in helping create a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment where all students can succeed.
  • Key Responsibilities
  • 1.
  • Instructional Support
  • — Assist students with classwork, reinforce lessons, support literacy and math activities, and help implement accommodations or IEP goals. 2.
  • Behavioral Support
  • — Support positive behavior strategies, redirect off-task behavior, and help maintain a calm, structured classroom. 3.
  • Student Supervision
  • — Monitor students during recess, lunch, transitions, arrival/dismissal, and other non-instructional periods. 4.
  • Personal Care Assistance
  • — Depending on assignment, assist with toileting, feeding, mobility, or medical needs. 5.
  • Classroom Operations
  • — Prepare materials, organize supplies, set up learning activities, and support classroom routines. 6.
  • Collaboration
  • — Communicate effectively with teachers, specialists, and families while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Minimum Qualifications
  • 1. High school diploma or equivalent (some districts require an associate degree or paraprofessional certification). 2. Ability to follow teacher direction and support instructional strategies. 3. Strong communication, patience, and interpersonal skills. 4. Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality. 5. Experience working with children or students with disabilities preferred.

  • Paraeducators may work in: 1. General education classrooms 2. Special education programs 3. Resource or intervention rooms 4. One-on-one student support roles The position may require lifting, assisting with mobility, or supporting students with significant needs.
