A Teacher Assistant assists classroom teachers by providing extra individual attention and instruction to students. Helps teachers with recordkeeping, preparation for lessons and activities and supervising students. May work with special education students, or work in a school library or computer lab; may be called teacher aide or paraprofessional.
Under the supervision of the Special Education Teacher, the Instructional Assistant ("IA") works as part of the classroom team to motivate students diagnosed with autism (ages 5-22) to learn foundational and prerequisite skills utilizing principles of Applied Behavior Analysis. The Instructional Assistant aids the teacher by implementing small group teaching sessions and conducting individualized instruction, while following lesson plans and recording data. Depending upon each student's individual needs, the Instructional Assistant may be required to assist in problem behavior reduction, as well as assisting the students with toileting, feeding, and other self-help skills throughout the day. Requirements of this position are necessary to support optimal student experience through the learning process.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides quality implementation of individualized teacher-designed instructional activities to meet the student's IEP goals/objectives, under the direct supervision of the classroom teacher. Collects accurate data on student behavior, skills progression, student care, and learning objectives, as specified by supervising team members (e.g., Teachers, Leads, BCBAs, Director). Implements behavior support strategies and effectively monitors behavior according to behavior plans and procedures. Assist students in functional skills such as brushing teeth, dressing, toileting, and eating. Supports students with mild to severe or aggressive behaviors safely and appropriately; must be comfortable in this environment. Interacts with students using positive reinforcement and least restrictive techniques to manage behavior, as outlined in behavior plans. Participates in and monitors student engagement during leisure activities to ensure safety and engagement. Maintains a clean and orderly learning environment. Reports directly to supervising educational team members regarding student performance, reported parent concerns, and support needs. Prepares for lesson implementation and activities in advance. Manages arrival, departure, and break times to ensure high quality services. Provides professional, efficient, and effective services in all areas of performance, including following the appropriate scheduling, administrative, and payroll-related protocols: Accurately completes necessary documentation, including data collection and treatment notes. Collects, records, and summarizes data on observable client behavior. Maintains client confidentiality and professionalism. Maintains and acquires technical knowledge by attending required training, in-services, team meetings, and other meetings as scheduled/requested in timely manner Follows all Company policies and procedures, as outlined in the Team Member Handbook and other written documents. Performs other duties, as requested.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
High School Diploma or completion of general education (GED) certificate required and must be 18 years of age Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in one of the following disciplines: behavior analysis, psychology, education, or related field, preferred The equivalent of two years of college coursework at an accredited college or university, with a concentration in behavior analysis, psychology, education, or related field (education and listed fields of study preferred) Passed assessment demonstrating proficiency in reading/writing/mathematics, required (for candidates without a college degree) Experience working with individuals with autism and/or special needs, preferred Maintains reliable attendance and punctuality; must be available to work the scheduled hours: Monday - Friday 8:00 am-3pm. Sensitive to working with ethnically, linguistically, culturally, and economically diverse populations. Communicates effectively, vocally and in writing; American Sign Language or bilingual ability is a plus. Proficient in use of Microsoft Programs and others. Communicates effectively and within a timely manner, e.g., responds to phone calls, emails, and/or text messages within 24 hours. Personal phone use is prohibited during training and work hours.
