Job Description
Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor in Chemistry (Non-Tenure Track) Tufts University United States, Massachusetts, Medford Apr 14, 2026 The Department of Chemistry at Tufts University invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track faculty position beginning September 1, 2026, for an Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor (rank commensurate with experience). This position will play a central role in the design, instruction, and ongoing development of the department's upper-level laboratory curriculum, with a particular emphasis on evolving the department's laboratory curriculum toward research-aligned, inquiry-driven models, including the integration of Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs) and/or graduate-level laboratory coursework across multiple subdisciplines. The candidate will primarily teach hands-on laboratory courses and will rotate among laboratory or lecture courses in physical, analytical, inorganic, and organic chemistry as needed, with a goal of implementing and scaling innovative laboratory approaches across the curriculum. Additional responsibilities include undergraduate advising and service to the department, school, and/or university.
Specific duties include:
Lead the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of upper-level laboratory courses Design and develop new laboratory experiments, with an emphasis on inquiry-driven and experiential learning approaches Supervise and mentor teaching assistants, including training, weekly coordination for laboratory instruction, and ensuring teaching assistants have received appropriate safety training Oversee course assessment, grading, and student support in laboratory settings Collaborate with Chemistry faculty, laboratory staff, and Director of Undergradaute Studies to ensure curricular continuity across the laboratory program Partner with Chemistry departmental and University staff, including the Instrumentation Specialist, and relevant safety offices, to maintain safe and effective laboratory operations Serve as a major and/or pre-major advisor to undergraduate students Contribute to departmental and university service activities Teaching faculty at Tufts are full members of the department, with opportunities for promotion and long-term career advancement. The successful candidate will join a collaborative instructional team committed to innovative, student-centered laboratory education. Additional details regarding workload and responsibilities are outlined in the departmental workload policy and full-time lecturers' collective bargaining agreement. Per the Mass wage disclosure act and the Full-time Teaching Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement, the minimum salary for an Assistant Teaching Professor inAY 2026-2027
is $79,848 and for an Associate Teaching Professor is $88,253. Required Qualifications Ph.D. in experimental chemistry or a closely related field by the start date Demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching Preferred Qualifications Significant experience teaching laboratory courses Experience developing or implementing inquiry-based or research-based laboratory curricula Demonstrated commitment to inclusive and equitable teaching and mentoring practices Experience with laboratory management, instrumentation, and safety protocols All applications are submitted via Interfolio, at https://apply.interfolio.com/181620.
