Job Summary:
The Preschool Teacher Associate assists with early childhood education activities as the children's classroom teacher support, working directly under the Preschool Classroom Teacher. Supports the Preschool Classroom Teacher in ensuring aspects of classroom teaching align with the Early Childhood Education ( ECE ) Program coursework and philosophy. Provides information, feedback, and support to families and collaborates with staff and faculty.
Essential Duties:
Support the mission of college-based lab school that serves student parents, their children, and students in the Early Childhood Education Program. Supports the planning, implementation, and supervision of the constructivist classroom including developmentally appropriate guidance, environment, and activities. Operates in the position of Preschool Classroom Teacher when the Teacher is out of the classroom for meetings, breaks, or temporary absences of less than 30 days. Supports in housekeeping activities such as cleaning, sanitizing, or snack preparation, and with daily health/self-help activities such as diapering/toileting, changing clothes, or washing hands. Supports the Preschool Classroom Teacher to document children's developmental goals and develop appropriate curriculum based on those observations. Greets and interacts with parents in a warm and respectful manner on a daily basis. Provides parents with information about their children through daily feedback. Coordinate and confer with Center Director, teaching staff, and ECE program faculty to ensure that childrens' programs meet the childrens' developmental needs as well as ECE program instructional needs. Collaborates with Center Director, teaching team, Center Coordinator, and ECE faculty to address questions, concerns, needs, or problems that arise from students or parents related to program operations. Follows policies for maintaining health and first aid records and promoting good health and nutrition. Maintain confidentiality of all student and family records. Maintain a healthy and safe classroom space, according to industry standards. Perform other related duties as required.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Physical Skills and Abilities:
Pushing, pulling, and carrying supplies, cleaning equipment, and files, and other equipment in the range of 10-40 lbs. Frequent lifting, bending, squatting, and kneeling while assisting children or conducting classroom responsibilities. Requires sufficient dexterity to operate a computer. Requires visual acuity to read words and numbers. Requires hearing and speaking ability sufficient to communicate.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in a child development center and office setting with minimal exposure to health or safety hazards. Operates mostly in a classroom environment with regular outdoor time. Occasional evening meetings may be required.
Education and Experience Education and Experience:
Associate's degree in the preferred discipline of Child Development, Early Child Development, Human Development plus one year of working with children ages 0 - 5; or an ORO Step 6 with one year of experience working with children ages 0 - 5 years old. Verified Practicum experience will be given the same weight as paid work experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge and Skills:
Must have exceptional skills in classroom and behavior management. Requires a solid understanding of child development, theory, practice, and related programs. Must have current computer and database knowledge.
Abilities:
Must be able to independently perform duties of the position efficiently and effectively. Must be able to provide instruction, guidance, and resource support to children and families. Requires the ability to apply technical rules, regulations, and guidelines related to Oregon Health Sanitation and Department of Child Care Licensing rules. Requires the ability to organize, plan, and prioritize duties to meet schedules and time-lines. Requires the ability to communicate formally and informally with a wide range of contacts within the college setting. Requires the ability to demonstrate tact, diplomacy, empathy, and friendliness in dealing with people under stressful conditions. Salary Placement Process:
According to the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between LBCC and the Independent Association of Classified Employees ( IACE ), all Classified employees begin at Step 1 of the salary schedule, corresponding to the position's grade. Placement at a higher step on the schedule is not negotiable, except by mutual written agreement of Association leadership and LBCC Human Resources. These exceptions are uncommon, and only granted in limited circumstances. The Preschool Teacher Associate position is graded as a Grade 17. Step 1 on the Classified salary schedule for this grade is $41,146 for a 190-day Academic Year appointment, prorated at .769 FTE . Progression on the salary schedule is subject to the terms and conditions laid out in the IACE Collective Bargaining Agreement.
