Job Goal:
To work closely with students with disabilities on a regular basis in order to provide them with the educational, physical, social/behavioral, and emotional support they need in order to appropriately participate in and benefit from the District's regular and special education activities including educational and co-curricular programs.Position Responsibilities:
Assists with the physical and health needs of assigned student(s) including but not limited to: feeding, toileting, transferring, positioning, such physical tasks as putting on and taking off of outerwear, moving from room to room, grooming/personal care, and basic health/medical care (under the supervision of a school nurse as appropriate/required). Helps with the loading/unloading of students from vehicles as needed, and supervises students while being transported by district vehicles as assigned. Assists the supervising teacher(s) in the collection and preparation of instructional material and equipment (including adaptive technology). Hear/assist the student(s) in recitation, reading, and other curriculum tasks, while guiding and helping them but not teaching them. Assists with the evaluation, monitoring, and supervision of students' work. Assists students in performing educational or recreational activities as initiated by the supervising teacher/specialist. Implement behavior intervention/management/modification techniques/programs as structured and monitored by the supervising teacher/specialist for individual students. Attend professional development meetings/workshops as appropriate/required. Respects the confidentiality of information about students, and communicates progress or concerns about students to parents or staff only with the prior and specific authorization of the supervising teacher. Under the supervision of the assigned special education teacher, work with an individual student or small groups of students to reinforce material initially introduced by the teacher. Accompany the assigned student(s) on field trips or when trips to the office, bathroom, classrooms, or the school nurse are necessary. Establish as fully as possible a supportive and sympathetic relationship with the student(s). Serve as a resource person, if and when requested, to the Individual Education Plan (IEP) team when conferring about one of the assigned students. Perform special health care procedures delegated by the school nurse such as tube feeding, Clean Intermittent Catheterization (CIC), and suctioning. Performs other duties as assigned by the supervising teacher, specialist, and/or administrative staff.Reports To:
Supervising Teacher(s), Building Principal/Administrator(s),Special Education Coordinator Qualifications Qualifications:
Special Education Aide License #0700 or ability to attain one prior to beginning work. (PCSD will assist in obtaining licensure.) High school diploma or equivalent. Post secondary training desired. Current First Aid/CPR Certified or willingness to acquire. Experience working with children/students with disabilities desired. Ability to carry out, under supervision of professional staff, all programs and specified services established for students. Ability to work collaboratively with a variety of teachers and specialists. Ability to work within integrated and specialized classrooms and other instructional/learning environments with children having a variety of exceptional needs and disabilities. Ability to carry out specified modifications and provide accommodations for students with disabilities in regular, special education, and any other classroom or instructional/learning environments. Prior knowledge of disability categories or willingness to obtain knowledge of disabilities as needed/required to appropriately assist the designated students. Ability to physically assist students with personal hygiene, health needs, bathrooming assistance, and transfer between environments. Ability to use non-violent crisis intervention (or willingness to learn/acquire ability) to provide appropriate interventions including physical restraint of students. Willingness/ability to be flexible with assigned tasks and break/lunch times. Ability to carry out emergency/crisis response procedures as specified by the building/department administrator (or the willingness to acquire the necessary skills to carry out the procedures). Ability (or willingness to learn/acquire skills) to perform any necessary computer technology tasks associated with the position. Ability to attend on a regular basis in order to ensure continuity and congruence of services provided for designated students with disabilities. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
