Salary $30.00 Hourly Location 940 Second St. Portsmouth, OH 45662, OH Job Type Part-Time Job Number 202300373 Division Academic and Student Affairs Department ASA-College of Health & Human Services Opening Date 05/06/2026 Closing Date 6/7/2026 11:59 PM Eastern Job Description Summary We are seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Professional Part-Time Tutor to support college students enrolled in a General Studies two-year degree program. This position will work with a specific cohort of students who are part of a grant-funded initiative. The ideal candidate will provide academic support in core subjects, helping students to improve their understanding of course material, develop effective study habits, and achieve their academic goals. Principal Duties and Responsibilities Provide one-on-one and small group tutoring sessions to students in the designated cohort. Assist students in understanding key concepts, completing assignments, and preparing for exams in subjects such as Psychology, Sociology, Criminology, and other General Studies and Human Behavior courses. Evaluate student progress and tailor tutoring sessions to address specific academic weaknesses and learning styles. Model effective study strategies, time management skills, and note-taking techniques. Collaborate with academic advisors and program coordinators to monitor student performance and provide feedback on their progress. Maintain accurate records of tutoring sessions, including topics covered and student attendance. Stay updated on current curriculum and course materials for the subjects being tutored. Create a supportive and encouraging learning environment that boosts student confidence and fosters a positive attitude toward learning. Minimum Qualifications A bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant field such as Psychology, Sociology, Criminology, or a related discipline. Proven tutoring or teaching experience at the college level, preferably with a focus on general education courses and social sciences (Psychology, Sociology, Criminology, Human Behavior). Demonstrated expertise in the subject areas to be tutored. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts clearly and patiently. A flexible schedule that can accommodate student needs, including evenings or weekends. Empathy and patience to work with a diverse student population with varying levels of academic preparedness. Experience working with grant-funded programs or special student populations is a plus.
