Job Description

The School Counselor provides a comprehensive, developmental counseling program that supports the academic, career, and social-emotional growth of all students. This position requires a valid Iowa School Counselor license issued by the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners and a master's degree in school counseling or a related field. The counselor designs and implements a data-driven program aligned with the American School Counselor Association National Model, delivering services through individual and group counseling, classroom guidance lessons, and school-wide initiatives. Responsibilities include assisting students with academic planning and goal setting, supporting career exploration and postsecondary readiness, and providing crisis intervention as needed. The counselor collaborates closely with teachers, administrators, families, and support teams to develop and implement interventions, including MTSS, PBIS, and 504 plans, and connects students and families with appropriate community resources. In addition, the School Counselor advocates for equitable access to educational opportunities and works to identify and remove barriers to student success. The role involves using data to assess student needs, monitor progress, and evaluate program effectiveness, as well as maintaining accurate and confidential student records. The counselor participates in school improvement efforts, professional learning, and leadership teams, while adhering to ethical standards set forth by the American School Counselor Association and the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners. Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills are essential, along with the ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and families in a supportive and student-centered school environment.
