Job DescriptionAs a Bridge Engineering Intern at KPFF, you will work alongside experienced bridge engineers on transportation infrastructure projects. You will gain hands-on experience with bridge analysis, design, plan development, and construction support while learning how technical decisions respond to site conditions, agency requirements, constructability, and project goals.
Throughout the internship, you will:
Assist with analysis and design of bridge components and related transportation structures under the guidance of licensed professional engineers.
Prepare and check engineering calculations, design sketches, quantities, and supporting documentation.
Support development of plans, details, and technical deliverables using structural analysis and computer-aided design software.
Coordinate with engineers, technicians, and other disciplines to understand project constraints and develop practical solutions.
Contribute to team discussions, quality-control reviews, and problem-solving efforts.
Participate in our Weekly Intern Training Series and other mentoring opportunities.
QualificationsCurrent enrollment in a Bachelor's or Master's degree program in Civil or Structural EngineeringCompleted coursework in statics and mechanics of materials by the start of the internship.
Completed at least two design courses (e.g., concrete, steel, wood, or masonry) by the start of the internship.
Basic understanding of structural engineering fundamentals, including free-body diagrams and shear, axial, and moment diagrams.
Interest in bridge engineering, transportation structures, and infrastructure design.
Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 in undergraduate coursework.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Strong technical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities, with the ability to work collaboratively.
Preferred QualificationsPursuing a Master's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
Previous internship, research, design-team, or field experience related to civil or structural engineering.
Interest in pursuing a career in bridge or transportation structural engineering.
Additional InformationWork Environment and Physical DemandsInterns primarily work in a standard office setting with occasional travel to bridge and project sites.
Field visits may involve walking, standing, kneeling, climbing slopes or embankments, and navigating uneven terrain.
Must comply with all safety requirements in the office and on project sites.
Internship DurationThe internship typically runs 10-12 weeks during the summer, with full-time hours.
