Job Title:
Structural Engineer - Nuclear Power (E2/E3) Job Description This role focuses on structural design and analysis for nuclear power plant projects, with an emphasis on steel and concrete structures, plant modifications, and support systems. You will perform complex structural and seismic analyses, develop safe and efficient designs that comply with industry codes, and support a wide range of nuclear plant modification projects. This is a long-term contract opportunity with fully remote work options, offering exposure to challenging projects, modern nuclear technologies, and strong prospects for career growth within the energy sector. Responsibilities Perform structural analysis, including static and response spectra seismic analyses, using plant criteria and applicable design codes. Develop structural designs for equipment and piping supports, building structural frames, and foundations for nuclear power plant facilities. Conduct piping and pipe support analysis in accordance with ASME Section III or B31.1 design requirements. Design lifting assemblies, rigging configurations, and crane-related structures to support plant construction, maintenance, and modification activities. Apply AISC steel and ACI concrete design codes to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient structural solutions. Perform component stress analysis using tools such as GTSTRUDL or ANSYS to validate structural performance and integrity. Review and evaluate plant impacts of proposed modifications and design changes, ensuring structural adequacy and regulatory compliance. Assess existing structures and develop retrofit designs to address new loads, updated codes, or plant modifications. Prepare detailed engineering deliverables, including calculations, design reports, drawings, and specifications. Participate in design reviews, providing technical input on structural engineering issues and recommending improvements. Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to support approximately 150 nuclear plant modification projects. Support project planning and execution by providing structural engineering estimates, schedules, and technical guidance. Communicate technical concepts clearly to internal stakeholders and clients through written reports and presentations. Contribute to a culture of safety and quality by adhering to established procedures, standards, and nuclear industry best practices. Essential Skills 4-10 years of experience as a structural engineer performing design and analysis for nuclear power plants, with project work in steel and/or concrete. Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and/or Structural Engineering from a US-accredited college. Hands-on experience with static structural analyses and structural dynamics for complex structures. Proficiency in applying AISC steel and ACI concrete design codes in structural engineering projects. Experience with seismic analysis and response spectra methods in accordance with plant criteria and industry standards. Knowledge and experience working with design codes and standards including AISC, ACI, and ASCE. Experience in piping or pipe support analysis using ASME Section III or B31.1 design requirements. Familiarity with component stress analysis using engineering software such as GTSTRUDL or ANSYS. Strong structural engineering background in nuclear plant modifications or similar highly regulated environments. Ability to prepare and review detailed engineering reports, calculations, drawings, and specifications. Effective communication skills, including clear technical writing and the ability to present engineering findings. Strong structural design and structural analysis skills, including design review and verification activities. Additional Skills & Qualifications Proficiency with MathCAD for engineering calculations and documentation is preferred. Experience working on steel structures is ideal; experience with concrete structures is a strong secondary asset. background in nuclear plant modification projects, including evaluation of existing structures and retrofit design. Experience collaborating with large utilities or major nuclear industry organizations. Ability to work effectively on long-term contract assignments and manage multiple concurrent plant modification projects. Strong attention to detail and adherence to nuclear industry quality and safety standards. Work Environment The role offers a fully remote work arrangement, with reporting lines associated with offices in Naperville, IL or Atlanta, GA. Candidates may be based anywhere within the United States, provided they align with Central Time working hours. Typical hours are 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Friday, all in Central Time. You will work within a design engineering environment that supports the energy sector, focusing on nuclear power plant projects and plant modifications. The work is primarily office-based in nature, using engineering software, design tools, and collaboration platforms to deliver high-quality structural engineering solutions in a remote setting. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Naperville, IL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $45.00 - $68.00/hr.
