About Us We are a family-owned residential remodeling and design-build company serving the Twin Cities metro area. Known for craftsmanship, functional space planning, and creative home solutions, we guide homeowners from initial concepts through completed construction. We are seeking a creative, detail-oriented Residential Architect / Architectural Designer to join our collaborative in-house design team! Position Overview In this role, you will be the architectural backbone of our remodeling projects. You will measure and model existing homes, establish structural and spatial architectural shells, and produce schematic layouts and construction documents. Working side by side with interior designers, structural engineers, and field project managers, you will ensure designs are not only beautiful and functional, but structurally sound, buildable, and compliant with all local Minnesota building and zoning codes.
Key Responsibilities Site Survey & As-Built Documentation:
Conduct on-site field measurements of existing homes; produce precise 3D as-built shell models.
Space Planning & Shell Development:
Develop primary architectural shells, functional floor plan layouts, ceiling plans, and exterior elevations for additions, whole-home renovations, and reconfigured layouts.
Structural Engineering Collaboration:
Interface closely with external structural engineering partners to evaluate load-bearing conditions, coordinate beam/post sizing, foundation adjustments, and framing details, ensuring all structural specifications are accurate, code-compliant, and seamlessly integrated into the plan set.
Client Engagement:
Participate in client discovery, design presentation, and review meetings alongside our sales and design teams to communicate spatial possibilities, architectural concepts, and structural feasibility.
Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration:
Partner closely with interior designers to integrate cabinetry, finishes, lighting, and plumbing specifications into the architectural shell.
Permitting & Construction Documents:
Prepare comprehensive, permit-ready construction document packages, detailed sections, and elevations in compliance with the Minnesota State Building Code and municipal zoning guidelines.
Construction Administration Support:
Act as the technical point of contact during pre-construction and framing phases, resolving unexpected field conditions, answering field team questions, and ensuring construction aligns with engineered plans.
Qualifications & Requirements Education :
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Architecture (B.Arch / M.Arch) from an accredited institution.
Experience :
3-7+ years of dedicated experience in residential architecture or design-build remodeling, with a focus on residential renovations, wall removals, and structural additions.
Structural Skills :
Proven ability to read, interpret, and incorporate structural engineering calculations, framing plans, and details into architectural drawing sets.
Software :
Expert proficiency in
Revit, SketchUp, Chief Architect, or AutoCAD Code Knowledge :
Strong working knowledge of residential building codes (IRC / MN Residential Code), local zoning ordinances, setbacks, and standard wood-frame construction methods.
Communication :
Clear, professional verbal and written communication skills with the ability to explain technical and structural concepts to clients and trades alike.
