Mechanical Engineer - HVAC and Plumbing Design Job Description This role offers the opportunity for an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join a growing design team within a large mechanical HVAC and plumbing contractor. You will work closely with construction management and other disciplines to design plumbing and HVAC systems for commercial and institutional building projects. The position combines hands-on design work, coordination with project stakeholders, and the chance to contribute to an employee-owned organization with a strong, family-oriented culture. Responsibilities Design plumbing systems for buildings, including sanitary, venting, water distribution, and gas piping systems. Perform system design calculations, including pipe sizing and layout routing within buildings. Design HVAC systems for commercial and institutional building projects in coordination with plumbing systems. Select appropriate equipment for use in building mechanical systems, ensuring performance, efficiency, and compliance with project requirements. Prepare detailed contract drawings that clearly document the designed HVAC and plumbing systems. Verify that all designed systems comply with applicable national and local building codes and standards. Collaborate and coordinate with architects, owners, other engineering disciplines, vendors, building officials, and other consultants throughout all design phases of building projects. Attend meetings with clients to establish project needs, review design concepts, and address design-related issues. Manage small projects or defined work areas, including planning tasks, monitoring the quality of work, and maintaining effective client communication. Participate in BIM coordination meetings to ensure that mechanical systems integrate effectively with other building systems and disciplines. Support the construction management team by providing design clarifications and technical guidance as needed during project execution. Contribute to the continuous improvement of design standards, processes, and documentation within the mechanical design team. Essential Skills Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited four-year institution. At least 3 years of professional experience working on commercial or institutional building projects. At least 3 years of experience designing HVAC and plumbing systems for buildings. Strong proficiency with AutoCAD for mechanical and plumbing design and documentation. Strong proficiency with Revit, including Revit MEP, for building systems modeling and coordination. Solid understanding of mechanical engineering principles as applied to HVAC and plumbing design. Strong fundamental understanding of national building codes relevant to mechanical and plumbing systems. Ability to perform mechanical and plumbing design calculations, including sizing and layout of systems. Ability to prepare complete construction documents and design drawings for mechanical systems. Strong communication skills to effectively coordinate with clients, architects, engineers, and construction teams. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with AutoCAD Fabrication is a plus. Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) license is desired. Experience participating in BIM coordination meetings and workflows. Experience in mechanical design within HVAC and plumbing contracting environments. Experience working on construction documents and design packages for building projects. Interest in growing within an employee-owned company and contributing to a collaborative design team. Ability to manage small projects or specific technical work scopes with minimal supervision. Work Environment The role is based at a large mechanical HVAC and plumbing contracting operation with a primary location staffed by over 200 employees. You will join a close-knit mechanical design team of approximately four professionals and sit alongside a construction management group of more than 20 team members.
