Building Systems Engineering Experience:
5+ Years Position Overview We are seeking an experienced Lead Mechanical Engineer with a focus in Fire Protection to join a well-established MEP consulting engineering team. This position is ideal for an engineer who has strong technical design experience and is ready to take ownership of projects while providing guidance to engineers and designers. The Lead Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for the design and development of fire protection and related building systems from initial concepts through construction. Responsibilities include system layouts, calculations, equipment selection, specifications, construction administration, field coordination, QA/QC reviews, and technical leadership. Candidates with experience designing systems for healthcare, commercial, education, institutional, or other complex building projects are strongly encouraged to apply. Key Responsibilities Lead the design and development of fire protection systems for new construction, renovations, and existing facilities. Develop complete floor plan layouts, system concepts, isometrics, details, schedules, and specifications. Perform engineering calculations and technical analysis for fire protection and related systems. Design and coordinate fire sprinkler systems, pumps, piping, utilities, and associated building systems . Apply applicable fire protection, building, and life-safety codes throughout the design process. Perform fire protection code research and assist with feasibility studies. Review fire protection designs for compliance with internal QA/QC standards . Coordinate designs with architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, civil, and other disciplines. Coordinate fire protection utilities with municipalities and other authorities having jurisdiction. Perform internal and external MEP coordination. Develop design narratives, details, specifications, permit documentation, and plan-review responses. Conduct field surveys and site visits to document existing conditions and verify construction progress. Participate in architectural, client, contractor, and construction coordination meetings. Manage and respond to RFIs, submittals, change orders, and construction-related questions . Troubleshoot technical design and field challenges and develop practical solutions. Provide value-engineering recommendations when appropriate. Review drawings and calculations produced by engineers and designers. Delegate and manage project tasks assigned to supporting engineers and designers. Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and leadership to junior staff. Assist with project proposals, scopes, schedules, and project management activities. Identify opportunities to improve engineering processes, standards, templates, and technical training. Fire Protection Design Experience Qualified candidates should have experience with several of the following: Fire sprinkler system design and layout Fire protection pumps and associated connections Fire protection calculations Fire protection utility coordination New construction, renovation, existing-condition, and demolition design Code analysis and interpretation Construction documents and specifications Field surveys and existing-condition documentation Permit and plan-review responses Construction administration Multidiscipline MEP coordination Experience with additional building systems—including domestic water, sanitary/waste and vent, storm, natural gas, medical gas, compressed air, pumps, or specialty systems—is beneficial. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, or a related engineering discipline required. 5+ years of experience within an MEP consulting engineering environment. Demonstrated experience with fire protection design for commercial or institutional buildings. Strong working knowledge of applicable fire protection codes and standards . Experience managing increasingly complex engineering projects. Ability to independently perform engineering calculations and develop technical solutions. Experience reviewing engineering drawings and providing QA/QC oversight. Ability to coordinate directly with architects, contractors, clients, municipalities, and other engineering disciplines. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to lead, delegate, and provide technical direction to engineers and designers. Preferred Qualifications Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred. LEED AP or other relevant professional certification is a plus. Healthcare project experience preferred. Experience leading or mentoring engineers and designers. Experience with project management and client-facing responsibilities.
