Job Summary:
Reporting to the Manufacturing Manager and serving as a leader within the team, the Production Engineer is the primary lead responsible for maximizing plant availability and capacity utilization (OEE). This role serves as the primary leader for assigned assets and provides technical oversight and cross-functional coordination to ensure maintenance, engineering, and reliability efforts are focused on eliminating downtime, reducing operational risk, and achieving production targets.
Key Responsibilities and Operational Leadership:
Asset Performance Monitoring and Risk Identification Analyze lost-production data, equipment reliability, and repair frequency to identify bad actors, quantify production impact, prioritize improvement opportunities, coordinate development and implementation of corrective actions, and verify resulting improvements in production and asset availability. Support the Mechanical Integrity program for piping, tanks, vessels, and structural equipment. Evaluate the operational and business impact of identified conditions, prioritize mitigation and corrective actions, coordinate operating constraints and interim safeguards, escalate overdue or unacceptable risks, and verify that approved corrective actions are completed and effective. Prioritize and communicate risks to equipment reliability and long-term operability. Lead the Potential Business Interrupter (PBI) process for assigned assets by maintaining the risk register, facilitating risk evaluations, recommending priorities and mitigation plans, escalating unresolved risks, and verifying that corrective actions are completed and effective. Root Cause Analysis and Reliability Improvement Lead and participate in cross-functional Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM), Root Cause Analysis (RCA), incident investigation, and equipment improvement teams. Ensure recommendations are practical, assigned actions are tracked, and completed improvements deliver sustainable production and reliability results. Coordinate the development and implementation of equipment strategies that improve long-term plant uptime, including asset care strategies, preventive and condition-based maintenance improvements, critical spare requirements, asset preservation plans, and equipment rationalization opportunities. Define operational priorities and performance requirements and verify that implemented strategies address identified production and reliability risks. Scope Development and Work Prioritization Support the Gatekeeper process by identifying, developing, and prioritizing maintenance outage and turnaround scope based on production risk, equipment condition, compliance requirements, and business impact. Define operational scope priorities and readiness requirements and coordinate execution support to ensure approved work addresses identified risks and performance objectives. Lead development and prioritization of proposed turnaround scope for assigned assets based on production risk, mechanical integrity requirements, reliability needs, compliance obligations, and business impact. Coordinate scope development and change management, define operating-readiness requirements, and verify that approved scope addresses identified operational risks and performance objectives. Lead development and prioritization of capital project inputs for assigned assets by defining the business need, production impact, operational requirements, expected benefits, and success criteria. Confirm that proposed projects address identified operational risks or performance gaps and verify delivery of the intended business benefit. Execution of Improvements and Operational Changes Lead assigned small-capital projects from scope development through implementation and closeout. Define business needs and operational requirements, coordinate technical input, manage project cost and schedule, ensure Management of Change (MOC) and operating-readiness requirements are completed, and verify that projects deliver the intended operational benefit. Coordinate operational requirements and cross-functional support for equipment improvements and complex maintenance repairs involving third-party engineering partners. Establish production priorities, operating constraints, equipment access and return-to-service requirements, and post-repair performance expectations, and verify that completed work supports safe and reliable operation. Initiate and coordinate Management of Change activities for assigned operational changes. Define the production basis, operating requirements, implementation needs, and readiness criteria; coordinate completion of required reviews and action items; and verify that operational deliverables are complete before implementation and startup. Performance Monitoring and Continuous Improvement Prepare monthly management reports summarizing asset performance, reliability activities, PBI status, emerging production risks, corrective-action progress, and key decisions or leadership support required to improve asset performance. Lead and support T2a and T2b LSB Way improvement activities by identifying improvement opportunities, supporting structured problem solving, completing assigned actions, and sustaining implemented improvements.
Role Accountability:
The Production Engineer is accountable for maximizing plant availability and capacity utilization, serving as the primary leader for assigned assets, leading Potential Business Interrupter evaluations, analyzing production losses, prioritizing reliability risks, developing outage and turnaround scope, coordinating asset improvement strategies, leading assigned small-capital projects, managing mechanical integrity risks, and verifying that corrective actions deliver the intended operational results. The role provides operational leadership, technical coordination, risk management, and clear performance expectations while working cross-functionally to achieve safe, reliable, and profitable plant performance. Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering with a minimum of three years of relevant experience. Experience within a PSM-covered continuous chemical, process, or petrochemical manufacturing environment. Working knowledge of fixed, rotating, and electrical equipment failure modes, with experience supporting failure mode analysis and root cause investigations. Demonstrated ability to build strong working relationships with operations personnel and effectively teach, coach, and mentor team members.
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
This is primarily an onsite role in a continuous chemical manufacturing facility. Occasional off-hour support may be required during unit upsets, outages, startups, shutdowns, turnarounds, or other operational events requiring production engineering support. Physical ability to work around and on industrial equipment, including frequent climbing of stairs and ladders. Willingness to work in a 24/7 continuous chemical processing facility around dust, chemicals, high temperatures, loud noise, and operating equipment. Ability to wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including FRC clothing, hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, steel-toed boots, hearing protection, and emergency respiratory protection as required. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.

This position is safety and security sensitive in nature. This position involves hazardous materials and industrial processes that may pose risk to employees and the general public. The facility is required to comply with Department of Homeland Security (DHS) CFATS Regulation 6 CFR Part 27 security requirements.
