is an independent, ISO/IEC 17025-accredited metallurgical testing laboratory located in Davenport Iowa. We provide metallurgical testing, materials evaluation, failure analysis and technical consulting services to customers in the agricultural, manufacturing, automotive and industrial sectors. Position Summary The Metallurgical Engineer will review laboratory test results, evaluate metallurgical failures and help prepare technically sound conclusions and recommendations for customers. The engineer has the option to work on site at the facility or to work remotely with QCML personnel using photographs, drawings, specifications along with remote access to SEM-EDS instrument and digital microscope with PAX-IT imaging for metallographic analysis and other project information. The successful candidate must be able to work independently, communicate clearly and apply practical metallurgical experience to a wide range of materials and component failures. Primary Responsibilities Review customer background information, drawings, specifications and service conditions Develop or recommend appropriate metallurgical testing plans Evaluate metallic components for cracking, wear, corrosion, deformation, heat-treatment problems and manufacturing defects Interpret metallographic images and microstructures Review hardness, microhardness, tensile, impact and chemical-analysis results Interpret SEM and EDS findings Evaluate weld metal, heat-affected zones and base materials Identify probable failure mechanisms and contributing factors Compare test results with ASTM, SAE, AMS, AWS and customer specifications Prepare or review clear, technically defensible failure-analysis and consulting reports Discuss findings with QCML personnel and customers by telephone or video conference Assist with unusual test requests and material-identification projects Support QCML's

quality requirements and documentation practices Maintain the confidentiality of customer information and test results Required Qualifications Bachelor of Science degree in Metallurgical Engineering At least 10 years of professional experience as a metallurgical engineer Demonstrated experience in metallurgical failure analysis Strong knowledge of ferrous alloys, heat treatment, welding and metallography Ability to interpret microstructures, fracture characteristics and laboratory test data Familiarity with common ASTM and industry material and testing standards Strong technical writing and verbal communication skills Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects Reliable computer, internet connection and availability during normal Central Time business hours Legally authorized to work in the United States Preferred Qualifications Experience working in a metallurgical testing laboratory Experience with stainless steels, alloy steels, cast irons, aluminum alloys and weld failures Experience interpreting SEM-EDS results and fracture surfaces Familiarity with corrosion, stress-corrosion cracking, fatigue and hydrogen embrittlement Experience preparing customer-facing failure-analysis reports Familiarity with ISO/IEC 17025-accredited laboratory operations BS in metallurgical engineering or advanced degree in material engineering Work Arrangement This position is expected to be performed remotely. QCML will provide project information, test data and digital images for evaluation. Remote access to SEM-EDS instrument, digital microscopes and lab computer for data analysis. Communication will generally occur by email, telephone and video conference during normal weekday business hours.
