Job Description

For over 30 years, CSL has created high-performance commercial and residential lighting solutions that empower and instill confidence among today's top architects, lighting designers, and builders. CSL's full suite of architectural lighting products feature the most advanced optic system in the industry with their stylish, small aperture form. Our company's devotion to research & development results in delivering high-quality, adjustable light with no glare at various beam spreads and full cut-off. It's system-based lighting but with a creative touch, and that's what makes CSL—Creative Systems Lighting. We are seeking a highly skilled and innovative Mechanical Engineer to lead new product development efforts from concept through production. This role requires a strong foundation in electromechanical design, a methodical and collaborative approach to engineering, and the ability to translate product requirements into manufacturable, high-quality solutions. The ideal candidate will bring deep technical expertise, hands-on problem-solving skills, and a passion for developing cutting-edge commercial lighting products in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
Responsibilities:
New product development from concept to production for completely new or new generation commercial lighting fixtures. Development of designs in a methodical, collaborative, stage-gated development process. Product technical requirement definition and documentation. Establishing design architecture to meet the product and marketing requirements within an approved schedule and budget. Defining timelines, schedules, and technical budgets for new product development projects. Product requirement verification and validation at various stages of the product development process. Detail design of mechanical and optical systems and electronic systems packaging. Working with the Product Definition owners to ensure the final production design meets the original marketing targets. Delivery of a production specification that meets product costs and/or gross margin requirements. Designing products that meet Design for Manufacturing and Assembly requirements. Technical Project planning, long-term timeline definition, and short-term task management. Defining, directing, and delegating project tasks as required to other team members. Releasing to manufacturing a validated, complete, and accurate set of manufacturing and assembly specifications/instructions and bills of materials. Supporting pilot production of new products.
Required Attributes:
An ability to take a product idea from receipt of marketing requirements to mass production. A demonstrable track record of design for high and low volume manufacturing methods, including: Injection Molding, Die Casting, Metal Stamping, Extrusion (metal and plastic), Wire Forming, Die Cutting, Sheet Metal (brake press bending, turret press, and laser cutting), Machining, and Additive manufacturing methods. Experience designing electromechanical elements and machinery to meet safety, environmental, performance, and regulatory requirements such as
UL1598, UL8750, IEC 60598, IEC 60529
(IP Code), and others. Familiarity working with NRTLs and compliance engineers to assist in achieving authorization to mark with Safety markings such as UL, ETL, and/or CE. Material science and material properties and performance knowledge to support optimal material selection for components made of polymers, elastomers, metals, and ceramics. Knowledge of optical grade materials and fabrication methods for illumination. Knowledge of LED devices used for illumination purposes and proper implementation of them. Knowledge of materials and ratings related to high temperature operation and fire resistance. Knowledge of passive and active thermal mitigation methods and thermal transfer mediums for power ranges up to 100 watts. Experience designing human-interfacing adjustable mechanisms. Expert-level knowledge of SolidWorks 3D CAD. Expert-level manufacturing drawing creation, including the use of tolerances achievable by chosen fabrication methods. Familiarity with metric and inch-based standards. First article inspection and tooling review and approval. Experience visiting and auditing component manufacturer and assembly plants worldwide. Experience making cost estimates for proposed designs at the component part and assembly level. Experience designing mechanical elements and assemblies for EMI/EMC control. Knowledge of statistical methods for tolerance analysis. Hands-on fabrication and prototyping experience. Working with quick-turn, short-run prototyping sources. Industry best practices for data management. Experience working with a revision-controlled/management system, including Engineering Change Notice/Order workflows.
Experience defining testing methods to:
Validate product requirements, including optical performance. Verify compliance with safety and regulatory requirements. Ensure product reliability within the operational envelope of the product. Understand failure modes and predict product lifetime. A methodical approach to problem solving. A collaborative approach to engineering and willingness to give and receive technical advice. Technical curiosity and desire to learn new and emerging methods and techniques. Ability to travel to trade shows, suppliers, and factories nationally and internationally on occasion (less than 10%). Other duties as needed. Experience/Qualifications Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering. Expert-level knowledge of SolidWorks 3D CAD or similar. Familiar with a defined PPAP. Experience visiting and auditing component manufacturer and assembly plants worldwide. Experience making cost estimates for proposed designs at the component part and assembly level. Knowledge of statistical methods for tolerance analysis. Hands-on fabrication and prototyping experience. Working with quick turn short run prototyping suppliers. Industry best practices knowledge for data management. Experience working with a revision-controlled/management system, including Engineering Change Notice/Order workflows. Experience defining testing methods and data analysis. Methodical problem solving. A collaborative approach to engineering and willingness to give and receive technical advice. US citizen or permanent resident (no Visa sponsorship available).
