About the Company Our client is a long-established engineering and manufacturing company in the Dayton area that designs and builds custom automated equipment, tooling, and process solutions for customers across a range of industrial markets. Their equipment is engineered around specific customer applications, with mechanical, electrical, controls, manufacturing, and project teams working closely together from design through build and implementation. As the business continues to grow, they are looking to add a Mechanical Designer to their tooling engineering team. The Role This position is focused on the design and development of precision tooling used within customer-specific applications. Unlike a traditional custom machine design role where every project starts from a blank sheet, much of the work involves taking proven tooling designs and adapting them to new applications, part geometries, and customer requirements. It's a strong fit for someone who enjoys the detailed side of mechanical design — getting dimensions right, refining existing designs, solving application-specific problems, and producing accurate, manufacturable work. There will also be opportunities to support the development of new tooling concepts and future generations of products, but the majority of the role will center around modifying and improving established designs. What You'll Be Doing Design and modify customer-specific tooling using SolidWorks Adapt existing tooling designs for new parts, applications, and customer requirements Create detailed 3D models, assemblies, manufacturing drawings, and supporting documentation Work with smaller, precision components where dimensional accuracy and tolerances are important Ensure designs are accurate, manufacturable, and completed within established project timelines and budgets Work closely with engineering, manufacturing, project management, and other internal teams throughout the project lifecycle Support the development and improvement of existing tooling designs Contribute to new tooling concepts and future generations of products Troubleshoot design and manufacturing issues as projects move through production Maintain a high level of accuracy and consistency across multiple customer projects What We're Looking For Approximately 3-5+ years of mechanical design experience Strong working experience with SolidWorks Experience designing mechanical parts, assemblies, tooling, fixtures, machined components, precision products, or similar equipment Comfortable creating detailed manufacturing drawings and working with dimensional tolerances Strong attention to detail and a focus on producing accurate, error-free work Ability to work within established designs and standards while identifying opportunities for improvement Comfortable managing multiple projects and working within customer-driven timelines and budgets Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering is a plus, but an associate degree or equivalent hands-on design experience will also be considered Nice to Have Tooling, fixture, workholding, or precision product design experience Experience with tight-tolerance machined components Knowledge of GD&T and tolerance stack-ups Autodesk Inventor experience — there are some legacy designs within the business, although SolidWorks is the primary CAD platform Experience working within a custom equipment, engineered-product, or project-based manufacturing environment Why Consider It? This is an opportunity to join an established but growing engineering and manufacturing business where you'll work closely with an experienced tooling and engineering team. The position offers a combination of structured design work and application-specific problem solving, without requiring every project to begin as a completely new machine or clean-sheet design. As the company continues to grow, there is also potential for someone in this position to take on greater responsibility within the tooling group or eventually move into other areas of the organization, including broader Mechanical Engineering, Applications Engineering, Project Management, or leadership.
