Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) Steel Fabrication Shop We are seeking an experienced, detail-oriented Certified Welding Inspector to join our steel fabrication team. This role is responsible for ensuring welding work meets applicable codes, customer specifications, and our quality standards throughout the fabrication process. The ideal candidate is an AWS Certified Welding Inspector with hands-on experience in structural steel fabrication, strong knowledge of welding procedures and inspection methods, and the confidence to communicate clearly with welders, supervisors, and project teams. Responsibilities Inspect welds and fabricated steel components for conformance with drawings, welding procedures, and applicable codes. Review material certifications, fit-up, joint preparation, welding parameters, and completed weld quality. Perform and document visual inspections and coordinate non-destructive testing as needed. Verify compliance with AWS D1.1 and other project-specific codes or standards. Maintain complete, accurate inspection reports, quality records, and nonconformance documentation. Assist with developing and maintaining welding procedures, welder qualifications, and quality-control processes. Identify quality issues promptly and work with production staff to resolve them efficiently. Communicate inspection findings clearly to welders, shop leadership, project managers, and customers when needed. Support continuous improvement in safety, quality, and production practices. Qualifications Current AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification required. 3+ years of welding inspection experience in a steel fabrication, structural steel, or industrial manufacturing environment preferred. ; familiarity with additional applicable codes is a plus. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, weld symbols, specifications, and inspection documents. Knowledge of MIG, flux-cored, stick, and submerged arc welding processes preferred. Experience with weld gauges, measuring tools, inspection equipment, and quality documentation. Strong attention to detail, sound judgment, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work effectively in an active shop environment and communicate professionally across teams.
